Trans service

Well, I am a new owner of a 2006 SLK55 AMG and can not verify the trans service has been done. Car has just turned 60k miles and will be getting it done asap. Would you suggest the dealer or an indy shop or a transmission shop?
FYI...this thing rocks!

I would establish a relationship with my dealer first. Others would say a good indy specializing in mbs.

Had mine done by and Indy who worked for MB for 20 years and on his own for 5 years and works only on Mercedes. 7k later and no problems. About one half the price the dealer wanted.

That is a chance, as you do not have a dip stick to check the level and the person doing it must know how to do a MB trans. Could end up over filled or under filled. Your everday gargae or tran shop may not know how to service. Did a person who knows MB cars. A good MB indy.

The proper procedure for this requires DAS to read the transmission fluid temperature and adjust the amount of fluid accordingly. Some people use a temperature gun on the housing, but that's not the recommended procedure.

I have no problem with an Indy as long as they use the right procedures. One of the shops I work with is owned and operated by a MB Master Tech with all the tools. If I went to a shop without the tools, I would probably go somewhere else.

I have decided to go to an Indy for this service, he has all the right tools and MB laptop setup and will do for a reasonable $350. Thanks to all for the great input.
On another note....Rodell I see you are also in the NW (Wa.) as I am and have a BMW motorcycle. I had a K1200S before my 1200GS, what part of the state are you located?

I'm on Seattle's eastside, south of Bellevue. I have a couple of cycles in the garage. So many toys, so little time!

Are you familiar with the Northwest SLK club? www.slknw.com A very active group.

That's a decent price for the service - Barrier's price is $443 + tax.

Had mine done yesterday by a local Indy. He's not inexpensive, but he is so meticulous that you could eat lunch off the floor of his shop. Pretty impressive place. For a small shop, it's rather amazing how much state of the art equipment he has.

I had brought in my car for tire balancing, and asked the owner if he knows how to flush all the old fluid out including the converter and cooler. I was very impressed that he know all about it, despite not being an MB specialist. He was fully aware that the car does not have a dipstick, and that he needed to use a scan tool to check the fluid level. The equipment he used is called a Transtech Transmission Service System, which he said works sort of like a dialysis machine. And he knew that he needed to get the special OE fluid from MB, which he was able to obtain within a couple of hours. Cost was $146 for labor plus $100 for the special OE fluid. He had to have the fluid brought in but he was able to get it from a supplier within a couple of hours.

The schedule for my 2005 does not mention any need for a fluid change. I find that somewhat scary given how much this transmission would probably cost to rebuild or replace. I do think I recall owners of later years mentioning that MB added a fluid change to the schedule for their cars. To me a complete fluid flush like what I bought is cheap insurance. I didn't think of the filter change...have to remember that for next time.

Would that be considered as part of the normal "major/minor" service interval?
