Question Advisory - prop shaft couplings starting to split

Car went in to the local dealer for a service today - A Service plus brake fluid.

All fine, but had an advisory that front and rear prop shaft couplings starting to split. They're not trying to rush me in to have them done, just a note for next time.

I feel I have a good relationship with the local mercedes dealer, but doesn't mean I trust them .

Has anybody else had these replaced? My car is 2007 with 51,000 miles.

Sounds expensive?

Cheers.

Those flex couplers do wear out but I just don't know at around how many miles of normal use. Since you have low miles on your car that's 9 yeas old, it sounds like yours just deteriorated due to time. I guess I should check mine too. Lol.

From the description I have assumed they are the couplings at each end of the prop shaft, ie taking the drive to the rear wheels. Called something else in the States?

Typically we call them Drive Shafts, not Prop Shafts. A lot of newer rear drive cars have these instead of just the old U-Joints at each end. I know that Cadillac CTS has them as well.
Think of the "Rag Joint" on steering columns. (if you are familiar with that term/part) Maybe Looks like this. (I just stole this image, might not be the actual part)

Ok... got it now. Thanks for heading me in the right direction. My car will be on a lift in the coming weeks to get new tires / "shoes" fitted. I will see if I can identify the condition of mine. Thanks again!

Yes, they are called flex discs here in the USA. I've heard "flex couplers" as well.

Was called a guibo on my BMW M5. When they deteriorate they vibrate and can ruin the seal in the differential and/or transmission. Not sure if our cars have a center support bearing for the drive shaft, but if so then that will also be under additional strain from the vibes.

Thank you for all your comments. Ironically I have just received an email from the dealer, shame it wasn't earlier

So I didn't get a follow up call from my local mercedes dealer as promised, so I phoned and left a message with a secretary last Friday morning, who promised a call back with a price. No response, so phoned this morning and inspite of asking to speak to someone in service reception, the telephonist / secretary put me straight through to some central appointment booking centre grr

Not the 100% customer satisfaction they get me to rate them after each time I use them.

Perhaps I am getting less tolerant the older I get, but time to try my newish local Independent me thinks:

Independent Mercedes-Benz specialist Clevedon, Weston-Super-Mare and Bristol

A person who new what they were talking about answered the phone

Phoned me back with a price 10 minutes later:

Both couplings / flexible joints are 286 (genuine mercedes), an hour and a half's labour at 72 an hour to fit, total bill 394. All figures quoted including 20% vat / tax.

Seems expensive for what looks like a straight forward job, even for an AMG. Hey ho I guess they do take some load

I don't know if they ship to you, but I'd guess that street price should be around $60 US.

3 weeks down the line and parts are still on back order at Mercedes Germany. Been a rush on them or just bad stock control I guess.

OEM from Euro 89, less 15% discount, only quoting rear (is the front identical?) -'special order'....

Thanks, the Indy has ordered them, they did say it's only one that is on back order.

Sounds a bit odd that the flex discs are deteriorating already that early. I recently changed the discs on my '00 S430 (16 years and 148k miles with original discs), they started showing signs of wear. Not bad yet, though. My '02 SLK32 has 125k miles and that shows no signs of wear yet. Could you have pictures taken of the discs, especially of the cracks? They should be visible when bending the disc with a pry bar.

The discs cost about $50 each here and can be changed with the car on ramps.
