Turn of the tide...

So I head to Birmingham to pick up my daughter from school today. It's about an hour drive (45 minutes in the SLK). Along the way I dust off a couple of pretenders. I've got the top down, the "tunes" up, and I'm generally enjoying life.

Get to B'ham, get my girl and get on the road. About 6 miles from home I hear a gawdawful rumbling from the right front wheel. I pull over quickly and check it out. My tire is shredded!

Needless to say I didn't even try the "fix a flat" MB included in my boot instead of a spare. I pull the tire off and lo & behold the splash shield has come loose at one end, it folded over against the inside of the tire and rubbed silently against the side wall until the heat generated by friction caused the rubber to ascend to heaven. Crap! I was planning on rear tires pretty soon but the fronts still had good tread.

It was so late in the day that I couldn't get a new tire mounted so I had to call a tow-truck to bringing baby home. I'm just glad it didn't happen at "dusting" speed!

"Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue!"

Sorry to learn about the tie incident. Glad everyone is fine though.

Question More woes! Advice???

Well, it's gotten worse. I took the wheel/tire in to get a new tire mounted. It seems my rim has two cracks extending from the inside edge to the bead wall. ARGHH!!! This defect went unnoticed in my pre-purchase inspection. It looks as though the previous owner had hit an immovable object at a rather rapid velocity.

The money I was going to spend on a CAI looks like it will be going to other things. I did find a recommended shop that does aluminum welding and they said they could fix the wheel.

They tell me it will be stronger than new, but considering the speeds at which I sometimes drive, I'm a little concerned.

Anyone have experience with having a wheel repaired like this? Thoughts?

Properly welded wheels are - as the guy says - stronger than the original. If the guys do a good job, and the wheel is still true, you should be fine.

One of my 19s on the 530i hit one curb too many and needed re-welding. Had to take it to a specialty shop - one that specializes in fixing such rims. Got it fixed and it's been 2 years without any issue... Knock on wood. So, yes it could be done and should be no worries...
