To P30, or not to P30...

THAT is the question!

Seriously, I am debating whether or not to get the P30 package on my 2013 SLK55 AMG. I know it comes with the following:

Cosmetic:

AMG Performance Steering Wheel
AMG 18-inch Multispoke Alloy Wheels
AMG Red Brake Calipers (new for MY 2013) [DELETED]

Performance:

Top Speed raised to 174 MPH (186?)
AMG Limited-slip Differential
AMG Performance Suspension

Regarding the performance aspect--I will never take this car on a track, and from what I have read, these are track upgrades.

Can anybody comment on the limited-slip diff and performance suspension? I did test-drive an MY 2012 SLK55 AMG with P30 and it seemed like silk on the highway. Not too sure how it will handle over small potholes and rough streets, though!

Thanks!!

Chris

I"d seriously consider it just for the *much* nicer steering wheel and the limited slip diff - both you'll notice every day.

I've driven a P30 R171, and it's not that much difference ride wise than the standard '55. I'd say take the P30 demonstrator around some of the roads you'll ride on a daily basis and see how hit feels - the R172's suspension is completely different than the R171's...

I am quite fond of the alcantara steering wheel on the 2012 demo I drove, but in 2013 they are replacing it (alcantara/suede) with something called DINAMICA. Not sure what that is, exactly!

And how will I notice the limited-slip diff every day? I don't know that much about cars, and am not even sure if my 2009 R171 has one? Does it have something to do with traction when accelerating? Will my tires spin more without one?

As for taking it out for another spin, it was here in Littleton for nay a week and was transferred to Albuquerque. So there are NO MY 2012 SLK55 AMGs in Colorado. That was the ONLY one that ever arrived and it wasn't sold here, in state.

dinamica is a faux suede/alcantara made by a company known as miko. it's supposed to be very eco friendly and all that.

For the limited slip differential and 6-pot front brake calipers, I would opt for the P030.

I agree with Eddy. 6 piston 365 mm brakes up front.

I don't' have the 030 but I put my own Quaife in. I track my ride and I wish I had the 6 psiton front / 4 rears.

Brembo wants close to $10K for after market for just the brakes.

What the other's have said - I don't really track my '55 stateside at all, but the LSD (Quaife) really makes it easier to push the car hard. I don't know if the brakes on the R172 '55 are smaller/bigger with the P30 package - if they are, then IMHO it's a no-brainer...

according to the amg website the p30 doesn't come with enhanced brakes.
it's just rims, steering wheel, lsd (awesome), delimited speed, suspension revamp, and painted calipers

for a daily driver non-track car i'd break it into

pros: painted calipers, lsd, rims (depending on design)
cons: suspension (not sure if i'd want it harder on a daily driver)
unimportant: top speed (unless you're in germany), steering wheel (eh not a big alcantara/dinamica fan + i wear gloves anyway)
verdict: i'd probably get it because i'd be too lazy to get an aftermarket lsd but $4,000 is a lot for mostly just a lsd. if it came with larger brakes i'd be on it in a blink of an eye.

As Kemno said....

Not sure I'd spend the extra although the LSD is very nice (And I do like painted callipers) think I'd spend the money on some of the other options going but hey if I was feeling flush it would def be on my list.

Howdy all, new potential SLK55 buyer here and been wondering the same thing about the P30.

I'm in the SF Bay Area and no one seems to have an R172 SLK55 to drive or even see, and the ones coming in are all customer ordered cars. Is there some way of locating a demonstrator (with or without the P30)?

Jim, you are right. There are little to no MY 2012 SLK55 AMG demos around. Most are spoken for, or just...gone. And since 2012 production was shut in early April, MY 2013 is due for production to start early-mid June.

I know, I have an order in for MY 2013 with a June 30th build. :-)

But, yeah, it's definitely worth driving one if you can. When you start that beastly V8 up, the sound is amazing!

And the best part is 19 MPG city, 28 MPG highway!!

P30 or not to P30 was not the question at my dealer last weekend.

We were working on locating a 2012 SLK55 in the New England area. He found 5 Black on Black and 1 Mars Red at various dealers from Massachusetts to NJ.

The one option they all had in common ordered by every dealer for the vehicles in their inventory was the P30 option.

Must know something we don't know?

I'll be tossing in the P30 if I decide to order in July.

Drive Fast! (mayber faster with the P30!)

To be honest, the reason all the spec'd cars had this option was just to get the matte black (evil) wheels... Almost everyone will agree that the black or obsidian black SLK55 looks wicked with matte black wheels. And you can't get them without P30.

The Mars Red one (the one I am building) looks FANTASTIC (I think) with the stock 5 spoke AMG wheel. It also looks pretty good with the silver one, and some would say the matte black looks good. But I am seriously considering dropping the package because of the price and the fact that I will NEVER track this car. It is going to be an everyday driver for me. And I believe that the Performance suspension that you get with P30 will make the city roads seem a lot rougher. But maybe I am wrong? I did take the P30 demo we had here onto the highway and got it up to 70 and it rode fantastic. But I wasn't thinking of the suspension components at that time to really evaluate it on side streets.

Anyhow, I have some time still before my order goes "RED" and cannot be changed anymore. I am still thinking about it! But the main item in the P30 package I am thinking is most important is the limited-slip diff.

Thanks for all the replies so far!

Do we have any R172 SLK55 owners here yet? Curious to hear a report of ride quality on bad roads (P30 or otherwise).

It's funny (or says something not great) that for all of the magazine reviews of the car, none of them comment on the difference...

My guess is because all the demos that magazines received (Road and Track, Car and Driver, etc.) were all sent 'fully loaded' and even the dealer spec cars that were built had P30. I believe that almost everyone that got P30 was because of the fact that they wanted a set of $4750 matte black wheels.. I NEVER saw the silver multi-spoke at all on any of the MY 2012 cars out there!!!

And I think I am done with my P30 decision. I have decided to opt for the nicer (IMHO) 5-spoke AMG wheels and NO P30. My friend, who is a very frugal man, was appalled at the idea of spending nearly 5 grand for stuff he told me (and I knew this) that I would never use since they are pretty much track upgrades.

Even my local dealer that is one of the top in the nation in sales volume (MB of Westminster, CO) stated that over the entire AMG line, less than 10% of buyers opt for AMG Handling/Peformance packages. I think the only exception is when the package adds an HP boost, i.e. Development Package on the C63 AMG. But you get no such horsepower gain with the SLK55's P30. Not even for MY 2013.

I think the main thing scaring me away (besides the extra 5 grand) is the stiffer ride with the Performance Suspension. This is going to be an everyday driver, so no thanks!!
