SLK 55 Trade-In Values

Hi Fellows,

Last week I got a mild itch to trade my 2009 SLK 55 with 10,500 miles on it.

In looking at various sites that give trade-in values I found values ranging from $37150 to $44,925. Although my car is in excellent condition I expected to get a trade-in offer somewhere between these extremes.

Much to my astonishment I was offered $32,000. The dealer said they had shopped the car to MB dealers as far as 500 miles away and that our cars are just not in demand.

I realize there is a limited market for 2 seat converts., but there is also a limited supply, but I thought those factors were taken into consideration when NADA, KBB, etc. establish values.

Is this what you have found or is this dealer just trying to give me the royal shaft?

Often what those sites are showing you are "wholesale" values, not trade in value. The dealer will give you a hit especially if you're not buying from him. Not a good comparison, but we just traded our 04 Mazda6. On the web they are selling (private or 3rd party dealers) for circa 6500...we were given 3500 from a Mazda dealer on trade.

The dealer has to clean and recondition the car and then make a profit. An late model SLK is most likely to be sold by an up-market dealer, with somewhat higher overhead so will be looking to make a bit more...partly on your back.

The difference in the $32K to the mid range of the KBB is the profit the dealer is counting on. His cost to recondition if the car is clean and up to date with service is mere peanuts.....just parts as his labor is captive and he needs to pay them regardless. Remember, the dealer makes nearly 75% of profit from used car sales as the price is up to them to negotiate. On new cars there are too many facts on price and demand whereas used cars are value driven. So if you as a buyer of your car do the KBB research as see $37K-$45K and the car is at a MBZ dealership, you feel they have gone through the car so if they have an asking price of say $42K.... its a bargain! Plus the dealer can get you in that car for $40K because you are now getting an absolute deal (in your eyes) and presto! a whopping $8K profit for a wash and wax cost of the dealership! BTW, they can then add in a CPO warranty for another $2K-$3K on top of that at a cost of about $1K......another $2K profit for a nice $10K overall profit!

Been through this scenario many, many times but never caught!

Sell it priviately for $40K and offer to buy a third party 12mo/12Kmile top of the line warranty for $1K and walk away with the $39K.

The OP is located in Mississippi so.... CA SLK55's post is dead on... if car is here in Cali. Not that many people walking around looking to put down $40-large on a used SLK55 low miler... Just a very small market, and even smaller in a state like Mississippi. Today, I'd say $35K is all the money to expect.... with high gas prices and low demand for V8 cars. The good news is summer is coming real soon and convertibles should be a tad more in demand. So just wait a couple more months and see what the market looks like then. You never know, someone may indeed shell out $40K if the car is like brand new and spotless... private sale, that is.

Tough sell. There are still brand new 2010 SLK's sitting on some MB dealers lots for sale at discounted prices. Some say that there is increased interest in the 2010 because of the unpopular looks of the R172 body style. Others argue that point. Either way................good luck selling.

On lower end vehicles, dealerships have approx. $750 per vehicle in cost of sale /overhead and the balance is profit dependent upon the asking price and actual sales price vs. their overhead expenses and what they pay you for the vehicle....

Not so easy to say sell it to a private party!!!! I have not sold to a private party since 1980's..... Confidentiality, privacy and avoidance of crazies not worth the nuisance of a private sale. I have found smaller and specialized dealerships more reasonable on trade-in prices because they may know how to market the vehicle. You may also loose leverage when trying to sell your vehicle at a dealership rather than trading it in for a new one - the larger dealerships may have too high of profit expectations.

$32K isn't a bad price for a four model year old car. That's around half of what it might have sold for depending upon equipment. A dealer might hope to pickup maybe $5K after some reconditioning.

You might also consider the R172 AMG 55 which is a superior car at least technically, is fully equipped at around $68K. Also the 55 wasn't a hit in my area, and the cars sat on dealer lots for months. If you dig out sales data, after the initial introduction, the number of 55s imported declined dramatically. Most people interested in the SLK aren't fanatical about engines. They buy the car for its looks and PRHT.

Right now my dealer has numerous low miles 350 R171s, and he is mighty willing to bargain on them. Expensive cars in most cases depreciate very fast. A perfectly good SL with very few miles can be bought for half of its list in a few years.

I occassionally buy a new car, because I keep it for many years. My 350 performs well, is satisfying to drive, gets reasonable mileage, and I bought it at a gigantic discount. Those who get dissatisfied with their purchase always wanting something new are going to have to pay a heavy price. Dealers or car lots have very sharp pencils when it comes to buying used cars. The profilt margins are very slim.

The moral is buy cars that you intend to keep. Of course, if your last name is Rockerfeller, it doesn't make any difference.

Put it on Auto trader's until it's sold program for $50. It took me 4 months to sell my C32 for $14500. Dealer only wanted to give me $8K. That was 14 month ago.

You should also mention that the 55 gets over 20 mpg on the highway in the ad.

If you still have factory warranty, maybe you should buy the extended warranty before your Mercedes warranty expires. You can only buy MB extended warranty before 4yr/50 expires. This will help you sell too.

Just my 2c.

You said something about trading. Did the dealer give you a big discount on the new car. The deal is the difference, Big discount on new and then low on trade or no discount on new and a high value on trade. It is the difference you pay is that what you are willing to pay. Dealer will only give you what they can buy it or sell it at auction less their auction cost and that todays auction price they can get online and not from outdated printed books. The internet is real time pricing.
