SLK55 - ECU Tune - is it worth it?

Hi All,

I realize there are some threads on this however I wanted to get more recent throughts. I have an SLK, AMS Headers, K+N air filters and am thinking about an ECU tune.....

For those that have done it - are there pro's/cons? What gains can you expect and who to use - OE Tuning, Eurocharged, Speedtuning USA etc... There are many tuners, and their claims vary widely.

Thanks in advance for the feedback.

-Randy

Don't do it

seen to many cars messed up, worked a a porsche dealer and saw everything from check engine lights to fouled plugs and failed compnents, just save your money does not make the car any quicker.

If your ar is stock, then I would say save your money but have have header and so I think there's benefit if custom tunes. I has my Clk500 tuned and gain about 12 rwhp. Have you thought about Sprint Booster? There's no hp gain and it won't improve your 0-60 or 1/4 miles times but for every day driving, it definitely give you more responsive throttle response. I love the Sprint Booster and has installed on all my Mercedes. I can honestly say I don't enjoy driving my car with it turn off.

I will be getting a eurocharge tune eventually. It does give you added horse power, and smoothes out the torque/hp curve. IMO the sprint booster is a waste of time. It doesn't really do anything but make your throttle pedal more sensitive.

DOn't need any more sensitivity on my throttle, so no Sprint Booster here either - I've got a Kleenman tune on my '55 stateside, along with their headers. They claim about 10-15 for each. I can tell you "seat of the pants / taking rubber off the tires" it's faster, but have not dropped it on a dyno, although I'll probably do that next time I'm close to the shop with spare time.

I'd stick with the name brands, but that's me...

I haven't done anything to the stock cats/exhaust/resonators. I don't want the car any louder and don't believe it will make that much of a difference power wise versus the investment. I added AMS headers and K&N Air Filters and both make a noticeable difference in acceleration and sound.

I've got Kleeman headers, high flow cats, and ECU tune and there is a "feel good" difference. But adding a quaife LSD is what put it over the top, much better at putting power to pavement!!

Where did you get the AMS headers, Canada or US ? I think the company does not exist anymore? If you have a supplyer could you forward it to me at my email. [email protected]
Thanks

You get the headers at German Power Tuning - they bought out AMS.

www.germanpowertuning.com

Good luck - I really like them and notice a big difference since installation.

Thanks for sharing that info.

I'm also located in the G.T.A. area, when the weather gets a little nicer would like to meet so I could hear how your car sounds in person if that's okay.

Where did you have the work done, installation. I read on the site "link' they are coiming out with some new ones.

So how would these compare to say Kleeman or SuperSprint headers, what are the differences along with quality and cost.

Actually suppose one can only compare to the existing AMS which you have because they mention "Coming SOON" for the new design.

Certainly - when it gets nicer we can meet up.

I got the work done locally at a relatively small shop (east end of Toronto) - what you need is someone that understands how to work on exhaust systems. One of the guys in my neighborhood referred me to him based on some work that has been done on both his 69 and 2011 Mustang's. It took about 3 hours to complete with no problems at all.

I looked at Kleeman, Supersprint etc.. but after doing my research found that AMS had a good reputation on the forum and people were happy with them and I'm happy so far as well. I only had the car out just after Christmas when it was warm and the roads were clear.

Send me an email at [email protected] when it get's warmer and you get your car out.
