Deciding on a car

Alright, if you didn't read my introduction, I'll sum up by saying I am in korea, but I'm coming home in about 5 months. I was dead set up until about a week ago on getting a 2005-2006 lotus elise, and then I discovered the slk55 amg. I remember seeing them years ago and loved them, but they cost way too much. Well now that a 2006 is in my price range (under $30k) I am seriously looking at getting one.

I guess what I want to ask is how would you compare it to a lotus elise? I know they are two different animals completely, so it is hard to make a comparison. I drove a lotus before I left, and I remember it being very quick and nimble. How does the slk compare in those aspects? The biggest reason I am leaning towards the slk is comfort, the lotus was fun, but I love to have a nice relaxing cruise, and I don't know how relaxed you can really get in that car.

I used to have a srt6 crossfire coupe, which I loved. It was extremely fast, and it used an AMG supercharged v6 along with most other drivetrain parts. It seemed to be a similar car to this slk. The slk will obviously be more refined, the interior seems to be much better. I can't tell which one is faster, they seem pretty close.

So yeah, if anyone has any experience with either of those two cars and can let me know how they compare I would appreciate it. Right know I'm leaning very strongly towards the amg. Still looking around, but it's looking good right now.

If it's comfort you are leaning towards then go for the AMG! I've owned and been a very active member of the Lotus club in the UK for several years. I had a Lotus Exige S2 for several years and it was an unbelieveable car. It handles like it's on rails and the performance is good providing you keep it on the revs. The AMG is completely different, it doesn't require the high revs, instead there is just a wave of power and torque that seems to never end. It's not as frantic as a Lotus and thus more enjoyable in my opinion. It cruises easily at 70mph at just over 1500rpm and compared to the Lotus suspension it's almost like riding on air LOL!
If you want a track toy and can live with the harshness of the Lotus then it could be the one for you? On the other hand, if you want luxury, comfort and a limitless supply of power then the AMG is the one. I've owned both and would pick the AMG everytime now that the 2005/6 is at the price it's at in comparison to me it's a no brainer, but don't expect the handling to be as good as there has to be a little compromise somehere.
Hope this helps you out

Hi Mr Lama

I came from a Crossfire to the AMG 55 & the ride is so much better with the AMG 55 & with more space inside + roof into the boot option its all good , Also with the V8 engine sounds , The V6+s/c is a very nice sound but you just can not beat a V8 with the roof down . We had the Crossfire & the AMG 55 at the same time for about 8 months & in the end we were fighting for the keys to the AMG ever time we when out (how spoilled is that ) . I have tryed to get in & out of a Elise but my legs are just to long & its just too low for me & trying to get over the high sill its not an option as a daily for me , so good luck & hope you are happy with which ever car you end up with .

Cheers

Andy

It's already been stated, comfort versus fun. Everyone needs basic transportation. With the SLK 55, you can do it with comfort and class.

That's another one that got me is the sound. I know the lotus is fast because of how light weight it is, but when you rev up that tiny 4 banger, it just doesn't sound impressive.

I can definitely deal with the lotus, I am young and not a big person, so getting in and out wouldn't be too big a problem. I remember it being very loud inside, the radio was near useless, and there was no space inside. That was the first place I learned what "driving on rails" truly meant, it seemed like no matter what you did with the steering wheel it just went with it. And it was a quick car.

The retractable roof looks amazing, I have never owned a convertible, but I have driven my parents skyline a few times, and driving with the top down is an awesome thing. Having a good stereo would be nice too. Having an automatic is something I really like, manual is fun, but I hate the clutch pedal.

Zerozero, tell me more (if you will) about the difference between the two. Things like the radio, speed, handling, interior quality and such. My biggest complaint about the crossfire was the plasticy interior, but that was about it. Oh, and I have heard the amg has great brakes, I remember the crossfire's were amazing how does that compare?

Thanks everyone. I know this is a biased group to ask, but you are making a really good case for the slk.

I know a couple of people who have owned an Elise as their only car.

Both said it was an unforgettable experience, but both sold up after roughly a year. As one said, its terrifying being in a go kart on a motorway.

Its something to do when you're young and care free before you cross that threshold (35?) when you suddenly value comfort! .... or you get one when you are old enough to afford to keep one as a toy in addition to a sensible car.

Personally, I'd say that if you can fit into an Elise and it suits your lifestyle now, then go for it and have fun for a couple of years before switching to a more serious (grown up?) car like an SLK.

ps - You should also try a Caterham or Westfield.

The Crossfire was off the R170 and the SLK55 is off the R171. I have had several Crossfires including an SRT6 Coupe. The SLK55 is more refined and quicker. The Elise, from my perspective, is more of a Go-Cart..........

Hi Mr Lama

Well you know when you were in your SRT6 & you went over a speed ramp/bump & you came down the over side it feel like you were sitting right on top of the rear wheels & the pain went right up your back ,not with the SLK (R171) , the inside looks & feels like to is a Merc ,Radio is great even the basic model (audio 20) (no bang for bucks) required . If you liked the Xfire brakes your love the AMG brakes ( But not the prices) , I would say the only one thing i miss off the Xfire is the rear tail coming up at 65 mph ( the SLS has copied this LOL) . The seats are to die for in the AMG , As J.C would say 'Its in a different league' , about 2 or 3 leagues.

When we picked up the Xfire my wife said this will be her car for the rest of her life ( Little did is know ) . I had to fight tooth & nail to get the Xfire on Autotrader , But now the AMG is written in our will .

Go on youtube & listen to the video clips of the Xfire & AMG 55

Cheers

Andy

the 55 may be more refined but no way its faster! unless your putting a kleeman blower on it the s/c v6 will eat a 55 any day. stock for stock they are about equal. add 2500$ in mods to the v6 and you have a beast that will fly by the 55 like its brakes are locked up $2500 in the 55 gets you headers not enough to keep up

Yeah, but 5 minutes later the '55 blows by the smoking carcass of the Crossfire with its rear diff in bits. ;-)

I am not much of a modder, so the stock car is pretty much how it will stay.

The options are hard to figure out on this thing. I know there is the nav and airscarf. Do harman kardon speakers mean it has a better stereo?Am I missing anything, and is anything really a "have to have" addition?

Hi Mr Lama

Too me you can not call an AMG a stock car its already been mod'ed by AMG , How i see the AMG 55 fitting on the scale of cars is as close to a supercar your get without spending 100K or you could call it a 'Ever day mini-supercar' .

Cheers

Andy

I had a S1 Elise a few cars back. Had lots of fun due to handling and looks. If you don't like attention, don't buy it. Kids especially will just stop in their tracks and stare at it. Didn't realise how uncomfortable it was until I sold it and bought a Boxster S. If you buy it as a daily driver....good luck, especially if you're anal about how you keep a car. Simple dents from adjacent car doors opening up on it aren't a problem due to the car bed fibreglass. But once some muppet drives into it or gives it a slight bump, you can crack the fibreglass which isn't as easy to fix as other cars.

Would I buy one again.....yes. It was a toss up for me between a Lotus 111r or 55 amg. In the end I thought I was getting too old for the Elise.

The cost of repairs is something else that got me on the elise, any damage to it seemed so expensive to fix, and it seems so easy to damage. I would have a stroke if someone barely hit the front of the car and it was going to cost $6k to get fixed.

I have pretty much talked myself into the AMG at this point. Still looking around, but I haven't found anything I like nearly as much (at least nothing anywhere in my price range). I'll probably keep looking at the lotus, but unless I find an amazing deal it will be a second choice.

(he loves F1 and driving fast on twisty roads) he went 200 miles away and drove a slk55 . bought it that day and never looked back. nuff said!

Ok, I have decided to get the AMG. I am now wondering about the options. First is the bixenon. How much better is that than the normal, and is it just as good to get HIDs for it? Second is the upgraded stereo much better? I think I had one more question but I forgot. If I think of it I'll ask.

Thanks for convincing me!
