Looking to get a used AMG 55 - Advise needed?

Hello All,

I am looking to replace my wife's current car, a 2008 BMW 135i which we bought brand new and which only has 10K miles on the clock after almost 3 and 1/2 years. Since we have no kids yet, and since I also have a company car which she takes whenever she wants to get anything larger than a few grocery bags, I believe we could live with the small trunk in the SLK which is my biggest concern.

We are thinking of a 2006 or maybe 2007 AMG 55 as this will likely be as fast if not faster than the 135i, and not too difficult to live with on rough roads (not that we plan on driving on many of these...)

Would like to get something with low miles (35K or les), still debating what color to go for, as well as which options. My wife likes Black (has never owned a car in a different color) but I also like metallic silver... it's an MB after all. Optionwise, I am sure we "have to have" the airscarf, heated seats and a decent stereo (I drove a friend's 06 about a year or so ago for a couple of days and the sound was definitely something to improve), but other than that, I don't know what are other options and packages available.

I have searched through several threads and I am trying to understand what are the key things I need to know about the car before pulling the trigger. Here are my questions:
1 - Is there anything particularly unreliable about this car? What should I look for in terms of details/work done to it?
2 - Is there somewhere I can see a list of all the options available for 06/07 cars?
4 - What are the colors available in these years? (I seem to have only seen silver, black, white, red and metallic blue)
4 - Aftermarket warranties a good idea? Any experiences/recommendation?

We are selling the 135i on the side, so not in a big hurry to buy. Still, I believe this is about the best time to start looking, so I want to be prepared if I come across an interesting deal.

Thanks in advance for any help answering these questions.

Thanks a lot Jeff. Fo you know where I can find the list of specific options available? I read here about option 30 being a "must have" but have no clue what that option code might be.

Thanks,

Perfect! This is exactly what I needed. I downloaded the 2008 and 2006/7 MY versions.

I'll go over these later today. Time to head on home now.

Thanks again.

030 is the big brake option...
If you have a chance, you may want to broaden your field to include the 350. A lot more car than the 135 and a bit easier on gas that the 5.5liter. However, if you want mind blowing performance the AMG is great.

There are tons of black interior SLKs out there - for a bit of variety there is red and tobacco (may have the MB term wrong, but a classic brown leather - very nice).

Reliability wise, there is very little that goes wrong with SLKs if they are cared for properly (by the sound of your garage, you will already know this).

Absolutely get the airscarf, heated seats and COMAND audio. There is a nav package if that is of interest. Most 350's and AMGs come well equipped. If you find something of interest you can get a VIN decode of what the car actually has.

Der Flieger gave great advice. Especially being open minded if you find a nice SLK 350. More options are best. Never heard the 030 performance option referred to as "must have". Nice for bragging rights. Good luck in your search.

List of options.

Stock for stock, a slk55 is faster than the 135, although the 135 can probably be modded for more horsepower more easily than the slk55 since it's already FI.

Are you sure a 350 is even equally as fast as the 135? Both are 6 cylinders, but the bmw is turbocharged. I'm pretty sure the 135 will be faster.

Pre 2008 models had the bigger brakes & 6 front /4 rear pot calipers.

Hello Mr. Flyer, thanks for the advise. I did drive the 350 and I do have to say it left me wanting a bit more in terms of performance... I do come from two previous M3's, then the 135i which we decided to get since it actually out-accelerated and out-braked the M3 while costing much less than a brand new M.

I would love to find an AMG with a brown/saddle interior, but I understand that color was not available in the AMG versions according to the brochure I downloaded today. I will likely settle for a two tone interior if I can find it.

Regarding the Big Brake option, I read about it on the thread about model year/options/price. I did not know what it was, but now I'm interested on it. I do track the car at least twice a year and do some autocross events, so big brakes are always a good thing to have.

I would like to ask: How do you check the maintenance records? Is the VIN enough for the dealer to run a check on this for me?

Thanks again,
Andres

The 2 toned interiors were "designo" and a special option that a buyer paid more for the ability to chose the interior colors. If the "right" interior colors is one of your criteria, you may have difficulty finding a good match.

I thought the 030 brakes were the same dimensions as the normal ones, at least in the 2007 and prior years. The main difference was the rotors were a semi-ceramic compound. Other than that, the electronic speed limiter of 155mph was bumped up to 174, different rims, but same size & heavier, harder suspension, various other accents & trimming in cabin.

Brake on the 030 were always larger than the standard - and were never semi-ceramic, they are composite disks - eg the hubs are a different metal than the actual disks. 360mm vs 345mm for those interested in the technical details...

I know the 135i is significantly faster than the 350. With 300 hp, and more importantly, a flat torque curve of 300 lb-ft from 1300 RPMs all the way to the redline, the car definitely moves and feels much quicker. Still, the 55 is simply in another league, which is what makes it attractive to me.

The info on brakes, specifically bigger brakes al around on 08 models and earlier is exactly what I was looking for. I understand therefore, that 09 and later models will need the 030 option to have these bigger brakes, right?

Thanks,
Andres

I'm a bit confused here then... are larger brakes standard on all pre-08 models, or do I still have to look for the 030 option?

Also, can someone please let me know how to obtain the options list from a car that I'm looking to buy?

Thanks,
Andres
