Seatbelt telltale light...

New and proud owner of a 2006 SLK55.

I noticed that my seatbelt telltale light stays on and chimes for about 10 seconds and then goes out whether seatbelts are on or not. Also taking belt off after that period does not turn on the light

Dealer says this is normal...

Did any of you notice the same?

Its an idiot light not intelligent so it comes on as part of the self test only.

Normal for them don't worry.

Of course, now I'll have to go into the car and check, but I think the chiming stops as soon as the belt clip is fastened. So that part doesn't sound right. Not sure about the light.

The way I look at it, 10 seconds is a long time. Back when I surfed, 2 second tubes was a long time.

In the UK at least there is no chime and the light is dumb while there is a chime on certain models i have no MB info to suggest its intelligent in any of the variants.

The electronics in the cluster and in the seatbelt catch are obviously working OK because if either failed then you would get the SRS error and thats all that can go wrong in the system the catch not knowing when the belt is in use and that cant be at fault as i say otherwise you would have the other error.

10 seconds sounds about right really thats about the length of time the light is on during startup

I don't know if this applies to the SLK 55.

If I don't latch the seat belt and turn on the ignition, the chime/beep is 10 beeps and then it (beep and light)stops even if you do not engage the seat belt. If the seat belt is engaged earlier than the 10 beeps, then the beep will stop and the red seatbelt icon light turns off.

If the seatbelt is engaged before ignition is turned on, then there is no beep and no red seatbelt icon.

The beep and light do not come on if you disengage the seat belt later even with the engine running.

It is important to know where you are (country). My 06 350 built for the USA was just in the shop because the light would not light up when the belt was unbuckled. The dealer caught this during a service. Seems there was a defective part. The light is supposed to come on when you are unbuckled and the door is closed. If you don't buckle up in the next minute or so, the light starts flashing and the chime rings to remind you. That's what my car did before the defective part, and that's what it does not that it is fixed.

Don't know if that would be the case in other countries, but that was the case here.

BTW - Mine is a 6MT. Don't know what the procedure is for the auto tranny. It might do the flashing thing only after putting the car in "D".

I just wanted to know if the car is OK - I bought it new - last 06 shipped to US. Seems from the reactions that this is "normal". Except for one

I plan to go to the dealer and check another one and post that.

Still think its strange for a car of this class that unbuckling during operation would go "unnoticed".

That's what my manual says too; but my 06 SLK55 (US) does not do that...

To be fair its not something that's taken into consideration really the warning chime is simply for a small number of markets its an after thought shoved on to satisfy requirements.

Nobody should need a chime to tell them to buckle up and similarly there is no valid reason to remove the belt until the car is shut down thats common sense and should be hammered into everybody when they are learning to drive, thats the thinking behind not having the car constantly check the belt it would just waste system resources the only things in the car that are being checked at all times are the sensor in the buckle telling the car the belt is engaged, the pre-tensioner's, the bag's themselves and the passenger seat pad.

I could understand if it was more a family car my friend has a new Honda Civic and it tells him if his children attempt to unbuckle themselves while on the move kinda handy since you can't keep an eye on them at all times being in the back seats and being young they do not always to as they are told much to his dis-pleasure.

Not having a go at you at all here wsiskens you have a new car and want to make sure everything is OK and i can totally relate to that its very sensible of you to take that attitude however i would simply have it shut off or the buckle replaced its obviously not broken but maybe a line to the cluster has become damaged stopping the feedback signal for the chime.

Its your call at the end of the day mate there nothing to the system so any fault is 99.9% going to be a bust wire 2 minutes to fix and any dealer should be able to do it but as i said before my seat belt lights on both my SLK and my SL stay lit for about 10 seconds when i fire them up so i cant see why yours would be different.
