Almost buyer remorse! Drove the new BMW 335 Convertible today!

Hey Guys,

As you know already, I sold an 03 M3 and purchased my new SLK 55 to replace it. Well, today was the Komen Ultimate Drive For The Cure at my local BMW dealer, and they actually had the new 3 series retractable hard top. I passed on driving the 328 and went straight to the twin turbo 335 convertible.

Initial impressions, this car is FAST, as fast as my old M3 (at least seat of the pants.) It is also very, very refined. The six speed auto is perhaps the best slush box on the planet, it shifts very quick (yes quicker than our 7 speed guys) when you pull the paddle towards you. Unfortunately, BMW has abandoned the Pull Right for Up and Pull Left for Down, now you pull either paddle and it upshifts, and you push either paddle to down shift. Just plain stupid in my opinion.

So anyway, I price one out with the options I would want and see it is going to be around $56,000, a few grand less than what I paid for my 06 leftover SLK. I am now feeling quite depressed. Then I get back into the Beast and let that V8 do its thing. OK, since this is not my daily driver, I have to say as a toy the 55 makes me forget all about that portly little 4 seater. If I want a practical car that gets good gas mileage, I have my TL to drive.

As an all around package though, the 335 Convertible is a damn nice car, but it just does not get the blood boiling. It is, if this is possible, too refined. Besides, the 55 is just too damn cool looking, and the look on peoples faces when you blast past them at 5000+ RPM is priceless, assuming you can catch a glimpse

the new M3 is a v8. But still, they look like every other bimmer out there right now. What looks like an SLK? nothing, o wait besides a car that cost 450G U.S. Dollars.

After tracking my 350 this weekend, I now know that MB puts a great package into the SLK. Your right, I get more girls checking out the car, even a few thumbs wanting a ride.

i dont overly like the new 3 series convertibles. the coupes are lovely, and the 335ci is awesome! especially with an m-tec kit and schnitzer rims, in that blue colour. however if i had the choice id choose a 55AMG all day long.
In Belfast everyone has a BMW, and people who have mercs are seen to be very important as the general public classify mercs way above bmws.

Important or not, impressed girls or not, all that doesn´t matters to me. I just want to drive a beautiful car. The SLK is one, that´s the point. And if it would be build by Volkswagen, I would drive a Volkswagen.

Wait for the M3 Convertible, then get it for the family truckster. Keep the SLK as the family traditional sports car you can pass down to your children.... Preferablly when they're in their thirties or above.

I live in South Beach... Where the BMW 3 series is considered the "Chevette" of South Beach. That would make the M3 the "Escort GT" right? LOL

Good Idea, then instead of little things going wrong, it would stall out in the Intersection like an old Pinto. Have the AC system fail, nemerous cold start problems. (Like my Son's new Jetta.)

Or better yet, like a client's new Passat, have the sunroof open everytime it rains, even through the car is turned off. You could only drive from garage to garage then. (that was fixed after six months.)

VW - HIGHEST Ego Emmissions and LEAST turnsignal use of any German car.

Bavarian Roaches

The Los Angeles Times has gone so far as to label BMW's "Bavarian Roaches."

http://research.cars.com/go/crp/rese...=&aff=national

I couldn't agree more: They are ugly and have infested the city.

I used to own a 1990 735i when I was in college. That was a pimp mobile. I still think it's a dated design but it still has a decent look to it. These ugly new BMW's are what turned me onto Mercs. In the past four years, I've purchased 3 Benz's. That should be a sign to BMW. The only saving grace for BMW is that no matter how off-the-scale their designs have gone the handling on the 5-series is still perfect. The Z4 and 7-series are another story.

And the worst part, some of those new Fords are starting to look good, which is probably no coincidence since the former BMW NA chairman left BMW and moved over to Ford about 5 yeras ago. But a Ford has a long way to go before a well-built car comes off their line. But the styling has turned a corner.

Now that Ford has sold Aston Martin, I wonder what will happen to the Jaguar XJ in the future. The Jag is beautiful, in fact, you can't go wrong with any Jag.

i test drove a 335i coupe last year, i didn't like it too much. very uncomfortable to drive. the steering wheel is too stiff and small, and god i hate those ORANGE gauges!! i wouldn't care if that 335i conv. was faster, it's still ugly. and as a matter of fact, its not too fast either. your talking 5.5 seconds to 60 mph. that's more like SLK350 range as opposed to SLK55. SLK55 hits 60mph in 4.5 seconds. i dont know if it's just me, but no convertible with 4 seats look right. it just doesnt match. (well maybe the 4 door ocean drive concept does) and in the first place you shouldn't be comparing a 3-series BMW to an AMG benz. they dont turn heads

BMW will never be as comfortable as Mercedes, when you build a car that can feel the road, it's not going to be comfortable, hence every journalist out there say MB sports cars feels too soft and comfortable to be considered a true sports car. IMO, the SLK steering wheel is too damn big and thin, needs to be smaller and thicker.

997 TPC turbo C4S
981 Boxster S
06' SLK 350, Iridium/Ash all pkgs. 6-spd, 19" DCR. (Gone but not forgotten)

I have sat in many TC cars. They all feel very fast. In fact, if I were blindfolded, I'd think they were faster than my 55. However, it's just the turbo kick-in-the-ass feel that gives the perception. I remember thinking the original TT felt fast but on paper, it wasn't anything special.

Anyways, I think the new 335 is a great car but how fast it is and how fast it feels are two completely different things.

PS. I like BMW steering feel. It's more sporty and communicative. Who cares if I have to put in a little effort when parking. I have a feeling I'll be test driving the new M3 next year and contemplating what to do.
