Potential difficulty obtaining 3rd party extended warranty for OUT OF WARRANTY SLK55

I thought I share some of my recent experiences and alert potential buyers out there.

I was trying to buy another SLK55 AMG to upgrade my other SLK280 recently.

I was having difficulty obtaining "extended warranty" from 3rd party for my potential SLK55 AMG purchase (MB's extended warranty DOES NOT cover the convertible roof mechanism. Therefore I was looking at 3rd parties. I confirmed this with two different MB dealers). MB dealer is quoting me like $3900 for two years AFTER/in addition to the CPO runs out (CPO is usually good for 12 months AFTER the initial original MB factory warranty). So if I buy a CPO from an MB dealer and wanted two more years (for a total of three years after the initial original MB factory warranty) this will cost $3900.

Here is the problem: On the SLK55 AMG's currently out of warranty.....the 3rd party companies will not offer the "full coverage policy", but will offer "lesser packages". Also when the 3rd party is willing to cover, the price is WAY UP THERE!! This is CONSIDERABLY higher than the "3rd party extended warranty" that I took out at the time of purchase for my other SLK55 AMG (it was still under original factory MB warranty at the time).

For the potential 2006 SLK55 AMG's that I looked at I was quoted the following (Most of the 2006's are out of warranty or almost out. For the 1st example below, the one with 32K miles on the ODO.....it has a few months left in the original MB factory warranty and is a CPO from an MB dealer. But as you can see the cost is still WAY UP THERE. Price had gone up since about one year ago--the last time I dealt with them. They told me that they are experiencing too much "unpredictability" with the SLK55 AMG's and the EXTREME high cost associated with repairs for the SLK55 AMG's.):

"To cover the 2006 AMG w/ 32K with exactly what you have (FULL COVERAGE) XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX - 60 months or 75,000 miles with a $100 deductible, it would cost $8183.
To cover the 2006 AMG w/ 53K with ("LESSER COVERAGE"....I THINK IT COVERS ONLY ENGINE AND TRANNY.....XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX, 48 months or 50,000 miles with a $100 deductible, it would cost $6345."

Man, I am just happy that I got my low mileage SLK55 AMG plus 3rd party extended warranty when I did.

Again, more than likely that ALL WILL GO OK and I will not need to use the extended warranty. But for the AMG's I would rather go the "safe route" and have some kind of extended warranty in place.

So the hunt continues for another SLK55 AMG to upgrade my other SLK280. Incidentally I should post my SLK280 for sale in the for sale section soon.

yea, the free ride with the extended warranty companies is over, ALL AMGs and V12s are now pretty much treated as toxic, it sucks because our SLKs generally don't have many issues, but for a time people were getting full 5-year warranties on SL600s and S-classes for only like $3000, it was nuts. Most the time they paid for themselves with the first visit to the shop.

Thankfully, I feel pretty safe with the SLK, I worry a bit sometimes, but not much. But if I had an E55 in the garage and no warranty... I doubt I would be getting much sleep.

Yeah I'm glad I got my 3rd party warranty when I did. Paid about $3700 for 5yr, 60k miles (measured from date of purchase), $100 deductible, bumper-to-bumper including stand-alone gaskets, seals. Shortly thereafter, they quit offering them on SLK55 altogether. So I guess my warranty is now worth maybe double as a selling point if I chose to sell the vehicle. You'd have to pry my dead cold hands off the steering wheel at the moment I love this car too much!

That's truly a crap situation - I just renewed my warranty in the UK on my '55 - though Mercedes - for about $1100 us. It does cover the roof mechanism, but not the cloth covering on convertibles, COMAND, etc - pretty much everything that CPO did.

I figure I'll get my money's worth, as the seat heaters in both seat bottoms are now not working..

I think the out of original factory MB warranty SLK55 AMG's are going to have a hard time selling. Unless the uninformed..........then I guess there is still a market for the uninformed. So the SLK55 out of warranty would have to take a big hit on price (I think to the order of at least $8K to offset the warranty cost. But even then, you CAN NOT BUY a TOTAL COVERAGE PACKAGE for it.

Sure, there will always be some companies selling warranty for anything...........but this makes me wonder if they will still be around when you need "warranty work"? I don't know.

When I inquired about extended warranties, I worried about the business model for many of the companies offering coverage. More specifically, new policies fund repairs on existing polices. If they don't continue to sell new policies, bankrupcy might be their only option and as a policy owner, you might be out of luck..... There probably should be some type of funding requirements like insurance companies to ensure sufficent funds to cover existing policies.... I am uncomfortable not having warranty coverage but more uncomfortable with many of the extended warranty policies offered....

Most used cars are sold without the benefit of a factory warranty or very little remaining. We see plenty of higher mileage SLK 170s being sold without issue. I don't envision used SLK 55 sales will suffer or prices will be reduced due to lack of, or unreasonably priced extended warranties. Prior to this, the consensus on extended warranties has been split, need and value, versus cost. I have a MB extended warranty because it made sense to me.

Warranties are nothing but insurance policies and insurance companies don't lose money.

Put some money in the bank instead and be "self insured."

In theory....

I did the opposite. I took money out of the bank to minimize my "potential" out of pocket cost. Isn't that why those that can afford health insurance, purchase it?

I don't have a warranty and have spent $2000 on repairs that would have been covered under warranty. SLK55's I was looking at were generally $5k-$6k more expensive with CPO and I didn't think it was worth $6k. Now I know $2000 in three months seems like a lot, but a lot of repairs are kind of common for me when I first get a car because I like my cars to be perfect and if a $500 fix for something stupid arrises [like the inop dimming/heating mirror] I'll happily spend the money on it. I doubt in the time I'll own the car I'll spend more than what a warranty would cover. I'd rather pay for that stuff as it comes as opposed to shelling it all out at once for a warranty.

my extended warranty through mb (5 years/75000) miles covers the roof, so why not get it thru mb?

I've read here on several occasions that the SLK roof mechanism as well as the Comand system isn't covered with the MB extended warranty. I found this odd, and wanted to verify. I pulled out the paperwork I received with my 7 year/75000 mile MB extended warranty I purchased a year ago. There's NO mention that these two specific items are excluded. Most excluded items are common sense items. Maybe with some other extended warranties, but definitely not with MBs.

Well, I guess I was told wrong. Maybe MB changed its coverage for 2010? Next time I will ask for the ACTUAL COPY OF WARRANTY AGREEMENT.

Thanks.

I've heard of way too many $100k+ Benz owners taking a huge bath in depreciation costs to the tune of the car barely retaining a third of its original value by the time the warranty runs out for just that reason. I confess that I also warned quite a few people that one would have to be completely nuts to buy an out-of-warranty Mercedes, too.

My 06 still had about 2 years and 25000 miles left on the factory warranty when I got it, and the repairs that were done on warranty already add up to a cool few grand.

Out of warranty AMG, I might have second thoughts about - any of the other, no problems. My C series has been completely trouble free other than a blown Climatronics control while it was still under factory warranty.

Like Don, I check again both my US and UK warranty paper work. Both explicitly cover COMAND and roof mechanism under the "Tier 1" service - as I've mentioned before. They both - however - do explicitly exclude the fabric of a convertible top. I just renewed my '55 coverage - in the UK, no deductible, Tier 1, for right at $1000 USD. Here, there's no difference in the price for a "out of coverage" car IF it's had FMBSH - just has to be inspected.

John,

I am also about to take out the extended Tier 1 warranty via MB.

Price i was quoted with 0 excess was 789.

I do notice that it does exclude interior and exterior trim, not sure why that is the case, especially as I have had parts for both replaced under the full 3 year warranty????

On my SLK280 I had problems with fading of the black plastic trim pieces on both sides of the rear glass. The first MB dealer I took it to said it was due to "elements" and not covered under warranty. I then took it to another MB dealer and they replaced the two trim pieces for me under original MB factory warranty with no charge.

Steve - I ask the same, and was told that the biggest difference between CPO and Tier 1 was little trim bits like that, and that at the end of the day, it's up to the dealer to make the call.

Most of the trim pieces are so cheap in the grand scheme of things, it really didn't influence my decision..

AMG seems to have been stigmatized by the warranty companies. Really, what is the difference between the engine in an AMG SLK55 and a regular E500? (I know there are some, such as a longer 92 mm stroke, but really its still the same m113) Likewise, I would be far more worried about owning an S500 out of warranty than a C55. There is just so much more to go wrong in the S, CL, and SL, and even E. The airmatic suspension is a good example...
