Engine warning light - R172

60 miles into an 80 mile journey last night, I pressed on to overtake, quite enthusiastically (it's not difficult) and the engine management warning light lit up, a deep bellow came from the exhaust and my speed dropped rapidly whilst misfiring considerably... I was horrified and pulled off at the next junction...limping at 55mph to get there.

I turned off the ignition and sat for 30 minutes looking for the MB assist number.... but to no avail, I'd left it at home.

I started her up and the warning light had gone out... hooray I thought.... and set off home with a note to self to contact the dealer in the morning....

10 miles on, I hit the throttle out of curiosity.... the engine management warning light lit up, a deep bellow came from the exhaust and my speed dropped rapidly whilst misfiring considerably ....

I limped home at 50-35 mph.

This morning... I started her up and the warning light did not go out and she was misfiring still. I called the dealer, who advised me to call MB assist as they had no cars to loan left.

I did so at 9:15am. I had numerous calls with excuses as to why somebody would be along to attend in a few hours... I'd already contacted my appointments for the day and cancelled at this point, so no matter.

About 11:30am a man from MB Customer Service turned up in his van... tinkered for about an hour and a half and came to speak to me. His diag tool (S.T.A.R.) had given up the ghost part way through his routine so he could not find the root cause; it would have to go to the dealer... there was definitely a problem (duh) and there was definitely a misfire (duh) and it wasn't the turbo as he suspected initially from my description as all was good when he checked that part over.

Numerous calls later and promises unkept....

... About 4:30 a man with a flat bed turned up and loaded her up.

later on, I was offered a C-class saloon, to which I baulked a tad (scuse my snobbery here due to the 800 a month I am paying for a prestige top of the (SLK) range motor - innit!) and was then offered an E-class estate... which was the best they could do....

It was promised for 16:45 and turned up at 18:45.... a very basic E 220 CDi estate with not even reversing sensors! Very basic (and as long as the QE2) ... not impressed at all... but better than a C-class no doubt.

I hope they fix SLicK ASAP!

I thought the R172 AMG SLK55 has the V8 but no turbo.

LOL it is an NA and you balked at a C class, so they gave you a bare bones E class. You should've probably gone with the C.

it wasn't the turbo as he suspected initially from my description as all was good when he checked that part over.

I would be very afraid.

Hi Mr. Pix hope you get Him/Her back soon and in good health. You should be able to contact MB Assist via comand. Under telephone contacts. It was added to my contacts list during a software upgrade.

And the problem was?

"wasn't the turbo as he suspected initially from my description as all was good when he checked that part over."

And what part would that have been, that "all was good" with, that he checked over, as we know it hasn't got a turbo?

I wasn't with him when he was tinkering, so I have no idea which part he thought was the turbo, but it was obviously good from his comment.

I don't know what the problem was as I have not got my car back yet!

I will obviously update you when I get her back!

So, I have her back and she's perfect again!

The problem was corrupt software. It was erased and a newer updated version installed and all is good.

I don't think this version of software has a turbo, so we should be good to go!

Is the version number published in the work order?

I don't have a work order, never been given one and apparently the service book is electronic in the UK too.

Just curious ... did you use the paddle shifters? I haven't run into any threads on a R172 250 and *yes* my little teeny tiny itty bitty engine has a turbo.

but... I think I figured out my problem and wanted to know if it was similar to yours. Every time I bury the accelerator (always traveling around 45 mph or so - I think I've just upshifted to 4th)... I downshift twice to get into a much lower gear and I think out of habit, lift off the accelerator first (while downshifting - kinda driving like you have a ghost clutch) then hammer the throttle. It accelerates for about 1 second then the car feels like a manual shifter where you let out the clutch really fast (if it were a motorcycle, it'd throw you over the handlebars) and the check engine light comes on and there's a loss of power.

I played around with the ESM mode - switched it into E first - drove around like that - seemed that the car was behaving as it should. Switched it to S mode- same deal. Switched to M mode - same deal. Parked, turned off car, restarted car - CEL light is still on. Turned off car, re-seated fuel cap, restarted car - CEL light still on. Following morning about to drive to work. Re-seat fuel cap, restart car - no CEL light.

I'm thinking I should have this looked into - but afraid to leave my car at the dealer for a month - I mentioned this problem before and they couldn't find anything wrong. I've avoided double-down shifting and no problem. It used to happen after filling up with race fuel so at first I thought it was the fuel. Then I thought I was contaminating the fuel filter by overfilling. It's neither of these bc I never overfill and we started putting 91 back in the car (we don't have 93 since we're in CA).

I am not familiar with the R172 250 engine or set-up but know it has a turbo.

Does the owner's manual say it is OK to use less than 91 octane fuel (US-California)?

If the CEL was caused by a poorly-seated fuel cap, it may take more than 50 miles of driving before the CEL light turns off.

May I suggest that it be connected to STAR/DAS by an indy and see what the codes says? If the car is under warranty, then a visit to the MB service department is in order. One usually gets a loaner C class vehicle anyways, so it should not disrupt your day's schedule that much.

In short, no, purely auto on this occasion in C Mode (same as E mode on yours I think).

If your CEL is lighting I would say there was a problem somewhere along the line, and unlikely to be driver induced... unless the fuel type is causing a problem. FYI, my Fuel cap states 98 RON.... which I used throughout the summer. Now winter is upon is here in the UK and the temp has dropped and winter tyres on... I don't tend to drive it as hard so have opted for supermarket grade 95 RON and she hasn't missed a beat yet. and saving 6 per fill up, so about 20 a week extra in my pocket ... and no CEL light since the update.
