R171 second oil drain plug

So I'm an idiot. I never knew there was a second oil plug.

Looks like it's never been open and I had to use lady leverage to get the damn thing off.

For R171 AMG with the M113 engine: there are two drain plugs as you mentioned.

I always thought I was missing a quart but just assumed it was in the motor somewhere.

That's why I always wondered how the 'extraction via dipstick hole' method worked on these engines - but apparently it does.

I ordered one Dimple magnetic drain plug a while back and recently had it installed during an oil change at the dealer. Should I get a second magnetic oil drain plug or is one sufficient?

I would think that Jeff would not allow the extraction method on the R171 SLK55 at present. As stated, the extraction method is acceptable for the non M113 engine and is also described in MB service manual CD.

I purchased the maintenance plan with my new AMG. I simply didn't want to wait 10k miles for the first change so I used the extraction method. I extracted exactly 10 quarts (the stated oil capacity), and it took just a tad over 10 quarts to get the oil level exactly on the full mark of the dipstick.

I understand the pro's/con's of extraction... but it seems clear that extraction removed all but miniscule amounts of oil from the engine.

My point was the 172 has a split pan also, but all oil can be removed via extraction. Perhaps that's applicable to your car, perhaps not.

I wouldn't bother as all the oil will very regularly pass by the one you have.

I had used the extraction method multiple times on oil changes for my 2006 SLK280 (which I drive in MS at work) worked like a charm each and every time and I did not even have to get under the car!!! Great!! It definitely works with little or no hassle at all.

I even brought the extractor and flew with me on the plane when I flew back home to SoCal (I fly back and forth) anticipating changing the oil on my 2006 SLK55 AMG. But for some reason I just felt I should do it the old fashion way by draining the two plugs which I had always done int he past on this SLK55 AMG. So I did not use the extractor and instead did it the old fashion way by jacking up the car and put on stands and etc......... I can tell you one thing for sure..........it took at least twice the effort and time for me to do it correctly and most importantly SAFELY as I made sure the stands are in good positions PLUS another lifting jack supporting the center front point in position just in case. I think I will just extract the oil out next time and I know I can do it fairly easily in about 20 minutes or so.

One tip: If you go to any auto parts store (O'Reily, AutoZone, PepBoys, Walmart, Advanced Auto Parts, or even an authorized Mann Filter independent dealer) trying to find the correct oil filter for (2006) SLK55 AMG, you will be wasting a lot of time since NONE of their computerize matching system will return an EXACT FIT. Even the authorized Mann Filter dealer's computer (and the Mann website) return the following (HU715.6X) which WILL NOT FIT. The inside diameter is too small to fit through the black plastic "tubing" and is too "tall" compared to the one original from MB dealership with "AMG" stamped on the side of the filter. This is true for all of the other brands, Wix, Purolator, K&N, Mann, Mobile 1, "house brands", and etc. Some of these will look like it fits through the black plastic "tubing", but is too tall and therefore at the other end will not create a good seal and therefore will let the oil leak through and hence NO FILTRATION at all. Correct me if I am wrong. I understand that Mann makes the oil filters for MB and others:

However, on the (2006) SLK280, the computerized search on Mann website or Amazon's website DID RETURN the correct filter which is the EXACT same one as YOU WOULD BUY FROM AN MB DEALER. I find this interesting.

Also I found that the Mann filter for the SLK280 is a "white" color which is "fleece" type. Whereas the "ORIGINAL" oil filter you buy from MB dealer with the letters AMG stamped on the side or MANN (if you can find one that fits) is "brown" which to me is some type of "paper" and not "fleece".

So I just order one from an MB dealer's website (an actual MB dealer up in the NE) for like 17 plus SH which works out to be around 20. The local MB dealer charges some more plus I got to fight traffic to get it.

Just my two cents.
