I have a mini cooper S and they do the oil change for you.

They would not do the free oil change for me unless I had over
10,000 miles on the existing oil.

They ought to know what they are doing, they were covering the warranty.

It was hard for me to get used to the larger number, but this helps me
get over the mental hurdle.

Thanks, JG

With the Mini S you have (I am assume its new enough to be under warranty and is the turbo not the SC model) You really should change the oil every 5k even if you have to pay for the in between oil changes. Those cars have a bad problem of using oil and tearing up the timing chain tensioner too. The stealership we get our parts from will not warranty the timing chain tensioner if the car is a quart low on oil when it comes in. Just a FYI for ya. Sorry for thread hijack. /me stepping off my soap box.
