Hello Dan.

This may be premature, but it might help those who want to retrofit their 2008 SLK 55 brake system to the 2007, or those who want to upgrade to '05-'07 SLK 55 specs.

What parts are needed and what would the part numbers be? (I've enclosed P/N from Mercedes Benz Fast Moving parts e catalog, don't know if they're correct or not) Are the following all that is needed? Any other hardware needed?

FRONT BRAKES:
1. Brake discs (rotors), front, one pair, perforated and ventilated. (P/N 171-421-01-12)

2. Brake caliper, left front- 13.4" AMG 6-piston fixed. (P/N 003-420-67-83)

3. Brake caliper, right front - 13.4" AMG 6-piston fixed. (P/N 003-420-68-83)

4. Brake pad set, front. (P/N 004-420-50-20)
Do we need 2 sets of brake pads? One set for the left and another for the right?

REAR BRAKES:
5. Brake discs (rotors), rear, one pair, perforated and ventilated. (P/N 171-423-02-12)

6. Brake caliper, left rear - 13.0" AMG 4-piston fixed. (P/N 003-420-29-83)

7. Brake caliper, right rear - 13.0" AMG 4-piston fixed. (P/N 003-420-30-83)

8. Brake pad set, rear. (P/N 004-420-49-20)
Do we need 2 sets of brake pads? One for the left and another for the right?

I'll PM the VIN just to make sure.

Thank you a whole bunch for your help.

Here's my previous post regarding AMG brakes. http://www.slkworld.com/ask-dansslk-basic/2281-amg-brakes-part.html

Here are the price list, cheaper than the dealer, I couldn't find prices for calipers, and any of the parts that Dan listed. If you get all that, please post it here and make it public, I'm interested and I'm sure others are too.

Item Number MSRP Core Price Price

0044204920 $162.00 $0.00 $115.83
Rear suspension - Brake components - Brake pads - Slk55
Slk55 2005 – 2007

0044205020 $179.00 $0.00 $146.78
Front suspension - Brake components - Brake pads - Slk55
Slk55 2005 – 2007

Item Number MSRP Core Price Price
1714230212 $180.00 $0.00 $147.60
Rear suspension - Brake components - Rotor - Slk55
Slk55 Back 2005 - 2007

Item Number MSRP Core Price Price
1714210112 $690.00 $0.00 $565.80
Front suspension - Brake components - Rotor - Slk55

Here's Dan's previous post, should be the same, but I would also check on the 030 pkg brakes, it's 14" front rotors, if the price isn't much different, that might be an option.

Hi,

As you know both the AMG's and the Brembo's are one and the same but if you go for AMG's your probably going to be able to keep your warranty since the parts come via Mercedes Benz not direct from supplier and have certain MB numbers stamped in showing they are OEM, just a little something to think about and you could paint the AMG's whatever colour you want and that would not make any difference to it.

Going on the PN#'s that you posted up you are looking at the standard 55 brakes no 030/P98 packs so the part numbers you have posted up are correct for the disk and pad's and they come in two's along with the disks.

For the calipers its looks like your going to need -

Rear -

Caliper
Parts Set Left - A0034202983

Caliper
Parts Set Right - A0034203083

Retaining Spring
Caliper - A0004218791 (X2 unless its automatically done)

TS Bolt Parts Kit
Caliper - A0004202882 (Same as above)

Bleeder Valve
Caliper - A0004213765 (Same as above)

Dust Cap
Bleeder Valve - A0004211748 (Same as above)

Screw
Caliper to wheel bearing - N000000000265 (X4 unless the parts site does it for you, also may be able to use your current screws for this but not 100% sure)

Front -

Caliper
Parts Set Left - A0034204783

Caliper
Parts Set Right - A0034204883

Screw
Caliper to axle - A1244210571 (Same as the rear caliper screw info)

TS Bolt Parts Kit
Caliper - A0004213674 (Same as rear caliper info)

Spring
Caliper - A0004219291 (X2 Unless done automatically)

Pull Rod
Caliper - A2214210014 (Same as above)

Screw
Pull Rod - A0169900601 (Same as above)

Bleeder Valve
Caliper - A0004209155 (X4 Unless automatic)

Dust Cap
Bleeder Valve - A0004211748 (Same as above)

OK mate thats the full kit for 55 brakes whats already on the 350 thats compatible i don't know without actually having the parts on my desk to compare so i thought if i give you the whole list for the system then there's not going to be anything that will jump out at the last minute.

Hope this helps.

Dan,

I'm planning to retrofit the rear brakes first, as the front set looks acceptable (appearance wise, but not sure about performance, probably a non-issue if one doesn't track the vehicle, wife/mate would "kill" me anyway if I plan on racing). Do you think this will be a simple swap procedure? Will the mounts for the rear brakes be different? Are the mounts included with the rear calipers?

Would Mercedes Benz be the best place to try (at least on initial inquiry)? I may also get quotes from an indy nearby that does MB, BMW, Porsches and Audi's.

Would aftermarket brake kits be a more cost effective alternative (e.g. Brabus)?

It should be a very simple procedure Eddy, as i said in the PM Marc is going to get some photos for me so i can be sure before saying 100% but if the mounts are the same its plug and play (almost).

I'd go to MB first then check out the Indy don't bother with the tuners if you actually take a look at the systems you will see they are all based on the same Brembo unit as the AMG's unless you go for very expensive carbon.

Thanks Ynot. I do believe some of the comments makes sense, e.g.:

"friends installed brembo brakes, fronts and rears, spent a lot of money, and the only thing they succeeded was that the ABS system occurred more often. ok and in hard braking they discs were less heated that the stock ones."

"One friend of mine upgarded his brakes (i think he put MOVIT brakes) into his Mercedes Sport coupe and although he spent a lot of money, he wasnt satisfied at all...
I remember the ABS system of the car occuring all the time and it became very annoying at the end...I think with SLK200 and 163hp the brakes are ok, most people believe they should upgrade them just for marketing reason without a real need."

"In a prior car I owned I upgraded the brakes and that is when I started having problems, warped rotors, etc."

I would appreciate opinions on the above comments.

You wont have a problem on the 55 if they where stupid enough to put fat brakes onto a 200 then they are going to have problems because the brakes will lock the wheel almost instantly, in the big heavy AMG you wont have any problems.

I promise

Good question web, we'll wait for DansSLK's (guru) opinion. I'll also try to ask this question hopefully to a MB technician who specializes in AMG/AMG brakes.

#18 · (Edited)
I am on the verge of pulling the trigger and swapping out the rear brakes (in about another 1000 miles or less). I've talked it over with the parts people and they're giving me prices a tad cheaper than OEMPartsdirect.com. I've also talked it over with the Mercedes Benz service dep't. and they're willing to do it (initial quote is between 3 to 4 hours on the labor units) but it's based on information I provided, as they're not sure/don't know that it is a straight swap as they haven't looked at the mounts or won't know until they remove the "old" brakes and try mounting the "new" ones.

I'd appreciate any feedback/further information at this point, or perhaps someone knows somebody who's done this on a 2008 SLK 55. I've looked at the Brembo Big Brake Kits (Grand Turismo model is recommended for the SLK 55) but the kit alone for the rear brakes costs USD $2600.

Edit: rough price breakdown on SLK 55 AMG 4-pot rear brake assemby -- rear brake calipers $900 (right and left), brake discs/rotors $150, rear brake pad set, $120, approx $1200.

Eddy i will verify this on EPC for you, i will check the part numbers for the struts if they are the same and the calipers have to mount to them then the mount points must be the same.

I would say near 3 on the labor myself so the dealer is clearly playing it straight with you and thats good to hear, of course removing the calipers means bleeding the system and its slow to do taking up time.

OK basically everything i could find says what we thought from the start i.e Instead of trying to adapt the car to the caliper they have adapted the caliper to the car.

Should be a straight swap over for a conversion all the part numbers for the rear axle and suspension are the same from 04-08

Thanks a BIG BUNCH

Woohoo !! Thank you very very much Dan. Y)Y):bannana::bannana:

I took a couple of pix of the right rear brake assembly. I did it blind as I just got back from a short drive and didn't want to burn my face on the hot exhausts :D.

I hope they show enough detail to make a determination. Does MB have the flexible stainless steel brake lines?

Beautiful sight Eddy mate, exactly what i want to see.

I have seen that identical attachment many times before and i am as confident as i can be especially after looking at your piccy's that it will be a swap.

I've attached the WIS pic from the rear axle caliper removal page, the caliper is the EU style one (used in the US upto 08).

The pic is not of particularly high quality I'm sorry but you can see from it how the caliper attaches to the car.

As far as i am aware Merc do not make stainless lines but i know a lot of tuners do so they should be easy enough to get a hold of.

That is very re-assuring Dan. :bannana:

Looks like I will email both the parts and service department tomorrow and set up an appointment. I will post my experience after the swap/upgrade.

Here's an interesting link after researching on Stainless Steel Hydraulic Brake line/hose: http://www.type2.com/library/brakes/teflon.htm.

I didn't know that the inner surface was actually PTFE (Teflon) and it is unaffected by hydraulic fluid used in the brakes and is long lasting. Care needs to be done NOT to kink the Teflon or you have to get a new line. The braided Stainless steel is actually to reinforce the PTFE. Moreover, since the rubber line have been extensively tested, there may be no reason to switch to Stainless Steel brake lines, unless MB service department knows of a reputable supplier.

I do recall the local indy telling me there's no reason to use Stainless Steel when I was inquiring about changing the brakes on the 280 in the past.

G
#24 ·
Thats very true Eddy mate,

I know the the stainless lines are actively used in off-road vehicles / vehicles that will driving on poor roads because the stainless is a tougher nut to crack.

Whenever i have been installing them its always been the added safety that they bring in rough conditions that has prompted the owner to buy them, i know we have techs here who have installed them for customers who stated performance reasons but with the new lines installed on them today your unlikely to see a difference in stopping power.

Bummer, brake calipers are on back order

Bummer, just got email from parts department stating the AMG rear brake calipers for the SLK 55 is on back order, not even in stock in Germany. This may take several weeks to months. I hope MB is not phasing these out.

#27 ·
Dan, you are a Godsend. Could you please check?

Brake caliper, left rear - 13.0" AMG 4-piston fixed. (P/N 003-420-29-83)

Brake caliper, right rear - 13.0" AMG 4-piston fixed. (P/N 003-420-30-83)

If it's available from your end, how can I convince the local Mercedes Benz parts department that it's available in England/Germany. Is there like a like a no./code to put in the computer so it directs them to the correct place to put in their order in Germany? Does it have to be ordered from AMG instead of MB in Germany?

Thank you again for all your help.

G
#28 ·
Mine's coming back as error also now mate sorry.

I ordered them from the UK warehouse, its an automatic system if the EPC can't find them in the DMS (Local storage) it checks the DC warehouse and if it cant find them there it goes to Germany.

I've had no indications they are being phased out mate so don't worry, Merc keep a supply of parts for out of production models for about 10 years so i think this is just a case of low demand = low stock.

If it helps mate I've never had parts out of stock for more than a few weeks.

#29 ·
Thank you very much mate for checking.

This is fine as I am not in a hurry to spend the money :D
MB technician also mentioned that I shouldn't expect any noticeable improvement in braking performance. I said I understand, it's mainly for looks.

#35 ·
Update: I just got a call from the parts department, the old-style AMG rear brake calipers are in (from back order) and I made an appointment for tomorrow. I will post my experience after the swap.
