I recently bought a slk200 2002 after writing off my previous 1999 slk230. I have had it for around 1-2 months now and the problems are starting to show themselves!!!
Took it to an independant mercedes specialist the other night to hook it up to the machine after finding the engine warning light on. Got a phone call back from him saying that there are two sensors on the exhaust just before the cat and after. He said this will be £400 to fix! - £35 for one of the sensors and £200 for the other. Does this sound right? That is including labor.
Find out where he's getting the £35 one from & get the other one from here then see if an exhaust place will change them for you ,I doubt they'd charge £165 for doing it .
I see there's a few of us from Essex on here now :rb
O2 sensors are very easy to replace. Geez, I took mine out just to see how thy looked and put them back in. Buy yourself the tool ( in US is like $8-$10) and dont be scared of your car. In this economy you gotta try it on your own. Its like screwing a bolt and placing in a plug into a socket...If he can order it from Mercedes so can you.....Any labor for that no matter what it is, is too much.
using generous amounts of lubricating spray coat the threads and let it soak in. o2 sensors get very hot and can literally weld themselves to the exhaust. stripped threads are no fun!
Thanks for replying you lot. Where I live at the moment I haven't really got a chance to get under the car and play about with it so I did get the job done.
They charge £45 an hour (which I thought was a bit better than a proper mercedes garage)
The price breakdown on invoice is:
£45 - hooked up to machine check out EML (I had a check engone light lit)
- found faulty central locking pump (the machine was saying that the doors were open when. they weren't, so the interior always stays on!)
- also oxygen sensor and air valve require replacement
£67.50 - Replace secondary air valve
£35.80 I secondary air valve
£36 - replace up upstream O2 sensor
£168 - Upstream O2 sensor
Subtotal - 352.30
VAT - 52.84
Thought I'd just let you know what happened. In future I thinl ill check on here first....
:td: That's the PSE unit ,you may be lucky & just be able to take it out & clean any corrosion on it ,or if there's nothing obvious you may have to bite the ****et & buy a new one as I had to do .
Yes I fitted new PSE myself ,mounted it upside down as per instructions on Benzworld & it's cured all the problems I was having ,everything now works as it should.
My engine management light came on and the car started to misfire a little.
I limped into the local MB dealer they did the 70K service which was due including the spark plugs and both the misfire and the warning light were cured.
The technician said the sparkplugs were fouled which caused the misfire and (if I recall correctly) the engine management recognised this and the warning light lit.
Try cleaning or replacing the plugs and see if it works for you.R)
Hope that we all have a better 2010 than 2009
