Default Price help for New Wheels and tires

In the DC/MD/VA area.

I have lots of vibrations in the car after running over a pothole, so it's in the shop this week.

2007 R171 SLK350 with stock wheels and tires, purchased Oct 2006.

It turns out that my tires are worn out, after having used them for 1 year and 7 months. They also report that the wheels are bent and need to replaced and can be fixed.

Price quote:
The new wheels and tires will cost me about $3200, for new wheels ($2100) and new tires ($1100)

Rear Wheels x2 = $1090
Front Wheels x2 = $1,002
Rear Tires x2 = $640
Front Tires x2 = $482

Mount/balance x4 = $120
Alignment x4 = $95

Front Brakes (Pads/Rotors) x2.5 = $360 Parts + $287.50 Labor

I was also told that the wheels can be repaired, probably for half the cost of a new set of wheels. I will receive a revised quote tomorrow.

Thoughts?

~shahedc
.

p.s. I am shopping around the area to get the best deal, and the above quote is just the first one I received.

I would definitely look around to find other options... There is a company in NC called Rim Guard and they set up shops around all the nice dealerships here and fix rims... They do really good work at great prices, i'd estimate it'd be around 200 dollars a wheel to fix a bent rim with them. It was 90 bucks for them to fix some severe curb rash for me and the wheel looks brand new... But I'd look around to find a company similar to this in you area for the wheels...

As for the tires, if this place is going to charge you for mounting and balancing them, you should just look online and purchase some tires and take them somewhere or even back there to get them mounted and balanced. Someone posted a link in another thread about a sale on pirelli tires on tirerack.com.

So if you have a secondary car and can wait and take your time with this I think doing things this way would be more cost effective.

Hope you get everything figured out though! I know it's a pain...

TireRack sells the AMG 5 spoke wheels for around $400 each. I would go with the 18" and match those with the closeout Pirelli PZero Nero. Have them mounted and balanced at Tirerack at no charge. Total comes out to $2144 + tax and shipping for 4 wheels and tires.

They also have the 17" wheels for about the same price.

There are some nice BBS wheels around 600 dollars 19" on gmpperformance.com, look into them.

I agree. The AMG five spoke wheels are one of my favorites, particularly in 18". We have them on my wife's SLK 350, purchased with Michelin PS 2s from the Tire Rack. I highly recommend the Tire Rack. Buy the wheels and tires combo, and just bolt them on. There's a seller on eBay that's selling the same (genuine AMG) wheels for less. I've never been a fan of the 2005-2008 SLK 350 multi spoke wheels. Here's your opportunity to get something really nice for about the same price your dealer is quoting. Personally, I wouldn't spend the money to straighten a bent wheel, unless it was a high dollar set. Repairing curb rash is another story.

wow, thanks for all the responses, guys!

My dealer's quote:
================================================== ==
The new wheels and tires will cost me about $3200, for new wheels ($2100) and new tires ($1100)

Rear Wheels x2 = $1090
Front Wheels x2 = $1,002
Rear Tires x2 = $640
Front Tires x2 = $482

Mount/balance x4 = $120
Alignment x4 = $95
================================================== ==
================================================== ==

and some comparisons:

From Johnny05350 : (Rim Guard in NC)
================================================== ==
$200 per wheel to fix bent rims
that's $200 x 4 = $800

But... my dealer's quote is $2,100 for 4 new wheels, and supposedly half ($1,000?) for just repairs

Since I live in northern VA, it won't make sense to take the car down there.
================================================== ==
================================================== ==

From Tummy: (Tire rack)
================================================== ==
5-spoke AMG wheels for $400
that's $400 x 4 = $1600 for 4 wheels
the total is $2144 + tax + shipping for 4 wheels + 4 tires

But you are saying that I can have them install it?
Yet there is a shipping charge?

Who will install if they are going to ship it?

================================================== ==
================================================== ==

From alroumi: (gmpperformance.com)
================================================== ==
BBS wheels around 600 dollars 19"

Hmm.. this is actually more, but thanks anyway.

================================================== ==
================================================== ==

More from Tummy: (Discount Tire Direct )
================================================== ==
There are also replica AMG wheels from Discount Tire Direct for $129 each.

again, where do I install them if they ship them to me?

================================================== ==

Tirerack will mount the tires on the wheels and balance them. You can have the whole package mailed to the dealer directly and the dealer can mount them. Or to an independent tire shop in your area. Tirerack has a list of shops they prefer.

Shouldn't cost you very much because they won't have to balance them. The other option is to take your tires off and put the new ones on yourself, but you would need a torque wrench and a place to do it. Jack up the car, unbolt the wheels, bolt the new ones on, adjust tire pressure, then drive the car to the dealer for alignment.

And if the bolts are different lengths for the new wheels and the old, don't get them mixed up (expensive voice of experience)

shahedC, I wasn't implying you come to NC to get it fixed, just the gas alone would put a dent in your wallet I was saying find a place similar to rimguard in your area. I did a google search and found this place.
http://www.rimdoc.com/ They are in the DC area, I'm not sure if they fix bent rims, i see a lot of cosmetic work on their webpage, but I'd give them a call and see what they say, and I'm sure there are other places like this in the area...

This is only if you want to replace what you have, if you're looking to buy new wheels, the guys above have given good advice...

Tummy,
When you say that Tire Rack will fit the tires, what location will they do that in? I am in northern VA.

For now, the dealer will repair the wheels for a fair price, so I'm just getting new tires, with a discount.

When it comes time to get new wheels, I will look at the options above.

Thanks again!

Tirerack will mount and balance at their location, where ever tirerack is located. You will get the wheels and tires together sent to you in Northern VA. You just have to take out your old ones to put in the new ones. It's not very hard, just have to get down and dirty.

Dealers usually are the most expensive, you might want to get a quote from an independent wheel repair shop and asked your dealer to match their price. I know some dealers matched price for tires.

thanks for the tip... I don't really have the skills (or the lower back) necessary to get down and dirty with a car.

I guess I pay the premium for having someone else do it at the dealership's service center!
