I have the Windrestrictor and you do not have to drill any new holes to install it. It mounts by pre-existing hardware and requires no modifications to the car for install. The 2 holes you see in the photo are to mount and remove the glass from the mounting bracket.

How was the install? Any drilling? Any pics?

I don't understand the geometry and mechanics of the power seat. I do drive with the cushion fairly low, because when I raise it I am unable to get as much seat-back recline as I like. I hope there is nothing malfunctioning on my car!

My short wife does drive with the cushion fairly high, and the seat so far forward that there is a good bit of package storage behind it!

And, yes, in driving a friends near-identical SLK 280 with the OEM wind blocker, we both felt that the black plastic on it was a problem for us.

Default Mounting...

There is no drilling required on either one of our models. (Windrestrictor)

There is a special bracket that was designed (black and powder coated) that is bolted on using factory threads located behind the area on top of the console. After the bracket is mounted behind this area the covering is put back on and then the Windrestrictor is mounted onto this bracket with 2 chrome screws with screw covers...

No drilling or modifications are necessary. If you removed the product you would never know it was there...

Since this photo we have updated screws with screw covers...

Windrestrictor:I merely wish you yould offer some plexi pieces to go into the roll hoops, to supplement the models you already make. They could be of the "pop in" variety and secured within the hoops by some black adhesive-faced trim on both sides that would be removeable if the owner desired. It is my opinion and my opinion only, but I think such a set-up using your clear center unit would be a much more elegant and practical solution than the OEM model.

Actually, If I were to critique the Windrestrictor design then my suggestion would be to have the angle of the plexiglass in the vertical axis align with the angle of the roll bars....could very easilly be accomplished by stepping back (bend) across the rear deck and then angling up following the lines of the roll bars...I have no experience with the product other than pictures on this web site and probably would buy one of this detail were incorporated..here's the disclaimer...this is just my opinion..Other than that I think this is a great alternative to being gouged by MB...after all, we are paying what for this car and it's a roadster made for top down driving..so we should pay extra for something that should come standard with this car, at this price point....ludicrous Next they will be charging extra for padding on the seats...Ok enough of my rant...

I see what you mean. From the pics, it looks like the bottom of the windrestrictor mounts a bit too far forward, and then the top tilts back at an angle that doesn't match any of the lines on the hoops. It would seem that this problem could be solved in some manner I'm not smart enough to think of -- but possible.

And I agree that the "standard equipment" mesh wind blocker is an absolute joke!

The seating of the SLK does present a challenge, if you have it further back you would have less recline. I guess with so little room to work with, it is a compromise, but may be MB should work out something better.

I still wonder about the issue with the OEM windscreen, it actually has big holes at the bottom that you can see through, I believe more to channel wind to reduce stress on the glass rather than to provide better rear view, so I am at a lost why visibility is an issue. But if it does not work for you then it does not work for you, it's that simple I guess. Good luck with aftermarket windscreen.

The mesh windscreen is actually functional though ugly, I also believe neither BMW nor Porsche provide a plexiglass windscreen as standard equipment, I think MB is just following what their competition is doing.

Default Bend

I guess you can not tell by the photos i posted, but our product does have a bend in it to the rear of your roadster.

This bend is not only for cosmetic purposes, but it maximizes the reduction of wind turbulence inside the cabin.

again, the reason for the bend in the product is to maximize reduction of wind turbulence... refer to another of my posts
talking about the science of this.
I'll try and get some better photos from the dealership that shows the bend.

Apologies for not joining in the postings sooner, given I started it. So my thoughts having read all the feedback: (which has to be said is excellent, so thanks for that)
I do like the looks of the 'Windresritor' and I believe there is no need for drilling as the holes are already there, just need to remove the hooks that are already fitted. The downside is there's no restriction for the roll bars, I did read some feedback elsewhere about 'wind deflectors' and said having tried covering and no covering on the roll bars, it difinetly makes a difference covering the rollbar. There is a German company that does provide a complete package including a plastic mesh covering for the roll bars (I'll have to find the url and will post later, haven't copied all favorites since upgarding PC !).
My orginal question was more around if anybody has or knows whether the R171 W/F can be fittted to the R170 (taking into account the need to change to the R171 style roll bars)

Default Wind deflector

Has any one got any views on the Piecha one? Personally I don't like the windrestrictor - only for its obvious "add on " appearance. Does the Piecha one look any better?
Cheers

Hi Yulser,

Personally, I would advocate trying to find an official MB one. I got mine from ebay, where they do appear from time to time, for about £170. In my opinion, much nicer than the windrestrictor one, as it fits the rollover bars precisely, has mesh inserts between the hoops and most importantly, you don't have to drill any holes to fit it. Hence can be fitted and removed in 5 mins. Also worth looking at eBay Germany (try searching "slk windschott") as they are always on there.

Just my twopence worth!
