After listening to comments made at the various meetings I've attended "down south", I thought I'd put up a post to try and gauge the true interest there may be in a Scottish weekend away. I'm happy to organise it and would be planning doing something similar to our Lake District trip, but based in Pitlochry in the spring of 2017.

Based on the response this initial thread gets, I'll put something more detailed together in a few weeks.

So, if you are interested, please reply with any comments, ideas, etc. you may have.

We're both up for this.

I'll have an initial look on the web at hotels for us two.
BB has certain needs.

Hopefully, I'll be able to organise swaps.

For the moment, I'll decline swaps for next spring.

This is a good chance for the locals to either join us for the weekend, a drive, or a meal.

Great way to get Scottish meets up and running!

Added to the uk meet and greet thread ;)

YAY - we'd be up for this, again depending on exact dates/planned length of stay etc. As it happens, we are visiting rellies in both Fort William and Aberdeen this October, though we aren't planning on going in the SLK. The advantages for us is that a) we wouldn't feel guilty about going as far (Pitlochry is almost exactly between the FW and Aberdeen, at the edge of the Cairngorms) and not seeing them in Spring and b) We'd take the SLK!! Win Win. ;)

Sounds excellent Davie. When we've stayed in Scotland we've stayed just south of there (Kincraigie) and there is some lovely driving and eating to be had. Also one or two fine distilleries to be visited (thinking Aberfeldy and Edradour) if the mood takes.

Can you put myself and Mrs. Savcom down as a possible please and I'll see if she's up for it. My Good Lady tutors so is somewhat restricted on dates as Spring is exam season, but we may try for our cottage again depending on dates.

Thanks

We're interested in this. Would like to drive The Old Military Road and Ben Nevis area.

I've just had a look at the map and noticed that Dalwhinnie is not far from Pitlochry.

Mmmmmmm :woot:
Hopefully we can visit this spot..

Amd I have the GPS coordinates.
Eilean Donan Castle as featured in Highlander would be good too!

LOL!

Although it's great to see this level of response to this thread in such a short time, how long are you guys thinking of coming up for? I guess it would be possible to fit all these places in over a weekend, but I figured you'd want to sleep as well! :D

Funnily enough, at the moment, I've already got 3 out of 5 of those suggestions covered. I have planned two routes which would give a good taste of the area. I still need to do a little tweaking to them, with regard to lunch breaks, comfort breaks, viewing places etc.. Once I've done that, I'll post them for your approval and input.

Davie asked me to add a poll to this thread, with the dates listed. He can make all of the dates proposed, and has no real preference.

The poll will remain open for you to cast your vote for the next 2 weeks. You can select more than one option, although you will only be able to cast your votes once. Please select all of the dates that you're currently available for this proposed weekend away, and then click "Vote Now".

I think Davie's plan is to confirm the most popular date once the poll closes, 2 weeks from today. :D

Drove up to a sunny Pitlochry yesterday and checked out a couple of hotels, restaurants, etc.. They are already getting booked up for next year, so I figured that I'd better get organised.

I'm proposing three potential weekend dates ....

31st March to 3rd April.
21st April to 24th April.
28th April to 1st May.

I've asked Dave to put up the poll as I thought that would be the best way of choosing the date as I have no preference and am available for them all.
So if all who are interested could consult their diaries, work rotas, etc. and select the weekends they may be available before the poll closes, I'll then organise the trip around what suits the majority.

YAY, we are available all of the proposed dates, and voted as such but our favourite would be 21/24 April. The previous weekend being Easter means that family commitments would have been taken care of, so we are good to go.

I voted before I read about voting for more than one. I will try and make all dates, but our preference is - 28th April to 1st May. Due to the bank holiday, so we can book the Tuesday off and stay longer :D

Sorry chaps - just back from a short recreational diving trip so I'm a bit behind the curve.

We can't make any of these dates as a couple as my better half tutors, and this is the lead up period to exams. She can make the Easter holidays (but of course you'd want to steer clear of this to keep the traffic low). I may get a pass for a solo trip in which case I think any date would do.

Pity. Will poll as 'can't make the dates' but will try my luck for a solo visit.

Sorry to hear that Martin, but I left out the Easter weekend because of the traffic as you say. Good luck with trying for the solo visit.

Really not wanting to rain on the parade but the last time we tried to see this I seem to remember the place was covered in scaffolding as it was undergoing maintenance. That was a year or two ago mind.....
Just checked their website. States "fully refurbished" so presume all work is finished. There is also a live webcam that seems to show the castle is scaffold free.

The last time I visited Scotland and Eilean Donan was August 2004! I was staying in Aviemore for most of my honeymoon and touring round from there as a base. Went onto Skye from Eilean Donan and covered a good amount of the roads on the island before doing the return trip to Aviemore. On a clear day the views from Skye back to the mainland are nothing short of spectacular. That was my favourite part of the visit last time as I recall although it was one of the better days weather wise too which helped!

Hi Davie
Not sure yet if Libby and I will be able to join you for this but may I suggest if you're based in the Pitlochry area a visit to the Hydro Museum may be in order. This is true engineering and I found the social history and politics behind it all absolutely fascinating too.
There again you may all be glued to your steering wheels the whole time!
