New Ride...

... as per my original thread in the General Discussion area; some of you will know that after 7 great years of owning an SLK, we have decided to let it go in favour of something with some additional seats for grand-parent duty.

The car we have chosen is this one:

Mercedes C220 CDI Coupe, AMG Sport Edition and yes it's an auto

Must say, even though we've only had it a few days (which accidentally included a run over Buttertubs yesterday ), we are well impressed with it. Very nice car.

Anyway, I intend to remain an honorary member of SLKworld.
Cheers!

Congratulations for not choosing the blindingly boring predictable obvious, a BMW 3 Series coupe. If you still hankered after fresh air you could have gone for 4 Series Beemer convertible which I grudgingly admit is a sleek spacious machine & of course has a folding metal roof.

Hi GeeJay, it was good to see you and Helen and you will be sorely missed with your SLK on the Welsh and North Yorks runs. keep an eye out and pop along as you did for the Sheep chase on the 15th, always welcome.

It's a nice car. I got the saloon as a courtesy car once. It took me a few minutes to figure out how to get the car going with its steering wheel stalk shift and all that however!!

This one is a floor shift for just sloping along and flappy paddles on the steering wheel for enthusiastic driving

Nah, it's a 7G-TRONIC Plus. Not the most responsive 'box in the world. Very smooth when cruising along, but not as good as a proper manual for hustling. It suits the car quite well, though I've only been running in so far so have not REALLY pushed it along.

One issue is that has on occasion not been releasing from 'Park'. I've had to release it manually, which is done by pulling the selector lever boot out and pressing the o/ride button.

Drove the car to the dealer on Tuesday for diagnostic where of course it was perfectly behaved so they found nothing. We drove it home and it was fine, but then it got stuck on Wednesday. Diagnostics on our drive with the car stuck in Park showed no fault codes through a Bosch KTS. So car went back into dealer on Thursday and when I parked it on their car park, the gear selector locked in Park. So they at least now have the car in fault mode.

We have a GLA 200 CDI hire car through Mobilo until next Tuesday, hopefully the dealer will have sorted ours out by then.

Yeah, I suspect it's something on the brake pedal/system. The brake lights are working, but apparently there are (at least) two switches/sensors. Hopefully will find out on Tuesday morning.

Update: Car now functions properly, not had it stick in park since we got it back. Enjoying it very much, though I do feel the odd pang when I see an SLK out on a day like today with its roof down..

Just may have to get another, one day...

Go for it, they have a reputation for dreadful depreciation so an R171 should be loose change & the R172 likewise soon.

Update - Due in part to an issue with micro blistering on the Fire Opal paint, we have traded in the Coupe against a 2016 C250d AMG Estate Premium Plus in Designo Hyacinth. Picked it up yesterday and must say it's a lot of car. Not been for a proper run in it yet, but first impressions are very favourable. Will hopefully get some photos of it later today.

@GeeJay, funnily Mrs Waylander is toying with the idea of a C-class coupe instead of her SLK (I'll keep mine!!). How was your experience of it for a couple of years?

Enjoyed it a great deal, strong performance, decent handling, comfortable seats, looked good too.

Apart from the issue mentioned above, it drove flawlessly throughout the time we had it. Ours had Premium Pack which included COMAND but not panoramic roof. Apparently this gives a little more headroom in the back. If that's not an issue for you I'd suggest getting one with Premium Plus pack to get the panoramic roof. I would also advise you avoid Fire Opal Red. It looks great, but there are apparently many cases of micro blistering including the one we had.

Right now I'd be searching for an approved used C250d AMG Premium Plus if I wanted a coupe again.
