We explicitly point out that all functions of this control unit should only be used while exercising caution and responsibility. We can NOT be held liable for any damage or injury caused by installing or using this product.
PLEASE READ THE COMPLETE MANUAL CAREFULLY BEFORE USING THIS PRODUCT.
Product Features:

  • Remote window and sunroof control: One-Touch operation of the windows and the sunroof with the original remote. No extra remote fob or reprogramming of the key or car is necessary!
  • For extra safety and visibility: Hazard Lights flash during remote operation.
  • User-programmable door unlock feature optionally unlocks the doors when the engine is switched off and the key removed.
  • Chirp on lock/unlock: If activated, the alarm horn will give brief "chirp" signals when locking/unlocking the car.
  • HomeLight XL: The fog lights or low beams can be activated for 30 seconds at any time by tapping the red panic button on the remote briefly. Tapping the button again before the time runs out will switch the lights off immediately.
  • User programmable: All features can be individually enabled or disabled. Some also allow different personal preferences to be set. All settings are retained even if the car battery is disconnected.
  • Shop/Diagnose mode: The remoteKEY can be set to be completely passive, as if it was not installed at all. It becomes invisible to diagnostic tools.

This module has 5 main "functions" , which all can be adjusted according to the user's needs:

Function 1 - Workshop/Diagnose mode. Makes the chip invisible to diagnostic tools.
Function 2 - One-Touch windows up and down by remote.
Function 3 - Unlock doors automatically when key is pulled.
Function 4 - Chirp on lock (1 short beep) and optionally on unlock (2 short beeps).
Function 5 - HomeLight XL.

Detailed function description (* = Factory Setting):

Function 1 - Product Enable - Workshop/Diagnose Mode ( OFF / *ON )
When disabled, the module becomes completely inactive and behaves as if it was not installed. This is useful if you need to take the car to the dealer or garage for inspection or repairs. The module can not even be seen by and does not interfere with the Mercedes workshop tester. For well known reasons we still have to suggest uninstalling it completely if you are not sure about your dealer's policies on aftermarket installations.

Function 2 - Remote windows operation ( OFF / *ON / COMPAT)
This function allows window operation with the original remote using the RF signal. This works on cars with and without the IR receiver and allows for a much greater range than the close range IR solution.

  • Tap UNLOCK on the remote 2x (in 1 sec intervals) to open all windows.
  • Tap UNLOCK on the remote 3x (in 1 sec intervals) to open all windows and the sunroof.
  • Tap LOCK on the remote 2x (in 1 sec intervals) to close all windows and sunroof.

  • Tap LOCK on the remote 3x (in 1 sec intervals) to open only the sunroof (while the alarm stays armed).
Tapping either LOCK or UNLOCK button on the remote will interrupt the operation immediately.
Setting 2 (Compatibility) uses a different command sequence and should be used in case the regular setting only activates the driver's side window when closing.

    Function 3 - Automatic powerlocks ( OFF / *KEY OUT / IGNITION OFF )
This function can be set to unlock the doors automatically, when wither the key is pulled from the ignition lock (setting1) or when the ignition is turned off (setting 2).

    Function 4 - Chirp Sound on lock/unlock ( OFF / DOOR / LOCK / *LOCK&UNLOCK )
This function can be set to either just give 1 short beep ("chirp") of the horn when locking the car by remote while a door or the trunk is still open (setting 1) or additionally chirp once when the alarm system arms (setting 2) or additionally chirp twice on disarm (setting 3).

    Function 5 - HomeLight XL ( OFF / *FOG / DIPPED BEAM )
This function turns the headlights on for 30 sec., when the PANIC button on the remote is tapped briefly. To turn the headlights off manually, just tap the button again. Setting 1 activates the fog lights (right fog light on the SL) and setting 2 activates the regular dipped beams (left headlight on the SL) as the light source.

  • Programming
This module is equipped with an interactive setup menu to allow easy setting of the desired options. All programming is done by using the steering wheel buttons (1,2) and the two green turn signal (indicator) arrows. Functions are indicated by the left arrow (3) and their settings are indicated by the right arrow (4).

Navigation is done by pushing the up and down buttons (1) on the left side of the steering wheel and settings changed by pushing the plus and minus buttons (2) on the right side. Each time either a new function is selected (UP/DOWN) or a function's setting (setting) is changed (PLUS/MINUS), the arrows will indicate the new status by first blinking the function (left arrow) and then the setting (right arrow). In case the left arrow is finished blinking and the right arrow does not light up at all, the appropriate function is set to setting 0 / OFF and hence disabled.

To enter programming mode, first make sure the key is not in the ignition lock and all doors are unlocked. Insert the key into the ignition lock, but do not turn it. Press and hold the upper MENU button on the far left side of the steering wheel (1) until the left arrow blinks once to indicate function 1. Now let go of the button.
From this point on you can navigate through the options by tapping the UP and DOWN buttons (1) and once the arrows are finished indicating the function and setting, change the setting by tapping PLUS or MINUS (2). The new settings are active immediately.

To end programming mode, either wait for 10 sec., remove the key from the ignition lock or tap the lower MENU button on the steering wheel. End of programming mode is indicated by both arrows lighting up simultaneously for 1 second.

    Examples:

Function 2 (Remote windows) is set Compatibility (setting 2): Left arrow blinks twice to indicate function 2, then right arrow blinks twice to indicate that this function is set to setting 2.

Function 3 (Unlock) is enabled (setting 1): Left arrow blinks 3 times to indicate function 3, then right arrow blinks once to indicate that this function is set to setting 1.

Function 4 (Chirp) is set to OFF (setting 0): Left arrow blinks 4 times to indicate function 4, then right arrow does not blink. This indicates that the function is set to setting 0 (OFF).

When the module is ENABLED (active), function 1 will be indicated as ON (1x left arrow followed by 1x right arrow). The DISABLED (invisible for diagnostic tools) mode will be indicated as 1x left arrow only.
    Installation - Steps 1-4
    1. Move the seat all the way back first, then firmly grab under the plastic cover with both hands (on the inside) and pull up hard. The cover is held in place by the brackets marked with the red circles.
    2. Check the circled spots for T20 torx screws that hold the side panel in place. Pry out the little oval cover if present, before unscrewing. Take the side panel out by pushing it outward (left) and down. Pay attention to how it interconnects with the other parts, so you can re-install it correctly later.
    3. Pull up the carpet all the way along the left side. Beneath it there is a black wire harness box. It's cover is held in place by plastic tabs. Unclip the tabs and pull the plastic cover up.
    4. One green and one brown wire harness connection point (terminal block) will become visible. You will need to work on the brown terminal block, so take it out of it's holder and pull it up. It may be necessary to carefully pry it out with a screwdriver, as shown. Just stick the screwdriver between the bracket and the terminal block while pulling up on the terminal block.
    Installation - Steps 5-8
    8. The connection point plastic cover is held in place by two tabs on the sides. Pull the tabs outward while simultaneously pulling the cover piece upward or stick a screwdriver between the bracket and the terminal block and carefully pry it off. It is a bit tricky to get off, so please be patient and don't use brute force. With the cover gone, the plugs can be removed. The following step explains in detail, which plug needs to be removed.

    C-CLASS:
Disconnect the plug which occupies the third socket from the right.

    E-CLASS:
Disconnect the plug which occupies the third socket from the right.
    Installation - Steps 9-12
    9. Terminal assignment of the module is as follows:

1 - CAN L to terminal block - original wires without stripe
2 - CAN H to terminal block - original wires with stripe
3 - CAN L to disconnected plug - original wires without stripe
4 - CAN H to disconnected plug - original wires with stripe
    5 - GROUND
    6 - +12V
    10. Replace the plug just pulled with the one from the remoteKEY and insert the plug into the remoteKEY's socket, completing the electrical circuit with the remoteKEY "in between". The original Mercedes wires are brown and have a stripe on only one of the wires. Double check by following the wires between the module and the plug / the terminal block, that the original Mercedes wires with stripes are connected to screw 2 (to terminal block) and screw 4 (to the one disconnected plug).

    11. Attach the wire taps to the following wires:

C-CLASS: RED wire with WHITE STRIPE (+12V) and BROWN wire (GROUND).

E-CLASS: RED wire with PURPLE STRIPE (+12V) and BROWN wire (GROUND).

These taps are removable and only leave minimal traces, which usually stay unnoticed.
    12. ALL MODELS:
Place the smartTOP module inside the harness box as shown. Connect the plugs to the wire taps and make sure they sit tight. Close the lid and make sure all tabs snap back in place. Replace carpet and side panel. Make sure you snap the side panel in place correctly, as there may be tabs that interconnect with other plastic parts of the dash or the hood release lever cover parts. Replace screws and plastic cover. Installation is complete.
