Thank you for posting this. It's always fun to watch Tim Schrick review cars driving them sideways most of the time, even though he's pretty harsh on the SLK here (Quote: "turning the SLK into a sporty car is not an enviable task.").
even caranddriver.com says, "Unhindered by techno-aids, the SLK[350]'s grip on the skidpad improved by 0.03 g compared with simply hitting the ESP switch on the dash." on the subject of turning the ESP off, is it possible to disable only the ESP by just removing a fuse or does one have to disable all ESP/ABS/BAS thru the dash display? in normal weather conditions, how safe or unsafe is it to drive with ABS and BAS disabled?

I can see where he's coming from, though. With respect to steering, brake feel and suspension, my SLK280 is not in the same league as the base Porsche Boxster I once drove. Actually, even my VW New Beetle GLS beats it in those disciplines. But then again, top-of-class handling is not what the SLK is all about for me.
Vehicle: formerly 2001 SLK320, and 2006 55AMG. Shopping again.

I agree. I don't drift my SLK very much. But I sure love driving it...
I don't really like the way he went about reviewing the slk. When you review a car, you should judge it on how well it does what it is intended to do. Although there are similarities between the two, the cayman and slk have pretty different intentions. I think he was seeing how well the slk could do what a porsche does rather than seeing it as a separate piece of machinery with its own assets.

To put things in perspective. Tim Schrick is a racing driver and he uses the criteria of a racing driver. I can't remember him ever commenting on stuff like the Sat Nav or the interior. When you know that, you know what to expect. To me, the outcome of this comparison was 100% predictable.
Dude is bias to Porsche but thats cool. I might have been the first in Nor Cal to drive a Cayman it is a great car one of the best handling car for the money.I don't drive my car around air fields all day, my car SLK55 is perfect for my environment, plus i like driving with the top down listening to a badass V8, Cayman, not for me. Does anyone know a place where you can drive like a maniac like that in Northern California?
