Default What fuel do you use?

There's no SLK in this vid, but some interesting octane info from 5th Gear. Since I was buying "100" in Germany, I wonder what performance difference I will get in the states with "93" octane.

I do know that my E350 and 400E perform better with Sunoco fuel. I avoid all the off-brand petrol stations, so that leaves me with BP, Shell, and Exxon.

Before moving to Germany, I was strictly a Chevron Premium guy (92). Since moving here, I get Premium Plus (93) at Esso since that's where our gas coupons are for. Sometimes I get it on the base, but I don't know who provides it...I think its Esso also.

All gas is relatively the same. The trucks from all the major companies line up one after the other at the same fill depot. The brand differentiation comes from the chemical additives and detergents added to the fuel as the last step prior to delivery. Any difference in the gas is the additives. The purity and octane levels of the fuel are identical between all brands. Meaning 93 octane from Shell is as good/pure as 93 octane from Wal-Mart (it's the additives that would be different). There was a 20/20 or Dateline special on this some time ago.

Originally, I ran regular unleaded in my wife's SLK 350. Car ran fine with no indications of lower octane fuel. I was guilty of not checking the manual close enough. I've since stated using the 93 octane. Honestly, I cannot tell the difference. The price per tank isn't that much more and I'm sure it's good for the car.

Well, what's funny is that there's a gas station near my home called Petrol Express, and they carry, get ready, "racing fuel" which is simply 98 octane.

Now I think I was running on 100 octane in Germany, but I was paying about $7.40/gallon after all the liter/gallon euro/dollar nonsense. But Petrol Express is asking only $4.98/gallon for the 98.

I guess what I'll have to do is hope that there's some 100 left in the tank when it gets off the boat, drive it to empty, then fill with 93, then hit up the 98.

Since I was born with two lead feet, I can easilly tell the difference on most fuel brands. All of the MB's I've driven are really sensitive to the fuel, and I can even tell when the same gas station gets a new fuel delivery.

Oddly a BMW I used to own ran best on Chevron. The MB's run best on Mobil, but they're few and far between in these woods. When I went to the AMG Challenge in California, they were pumping Sunoco, and those cars were what made me get my SLK. There's plenty of Sunoco here, so I'm not going to be disappointed.

I get 110 LL from the distributor for my race engines, bet that would boost you some. It even smells different when it burns. Costs 8.00 gallon, 4 gallons per run with the Nomad 427 cu in 825 HP at 8 sec.

I used Chevron for years with no problems but tried Shell in the Merc and I get better mileage Best with Chevron was 28mpg all highway I get 31.8 now combined about 30% surface & 70% highway this has been consistant now on the last 10 tanks --- 91 octane.

we can get 100 octane over here at a couple gas stations for 'racing' also.

Isn't the octane rating system in europe different from the US? (RON/MON)

Yeah 100MON (US) would be slightly below the EU recommended 98RON they used to say Shell Optimax but now they don't make that any more its V-Power so thats 99RON

Yes it is, from a previous posting...

You can't directly compare advertised octane ratings between North America and Europe as they are calculated differently. On this side of the pond, pump octane is an average of 2 ratings, research octane (RON) and motor octane (MON). If you look at any gas pump in the United States, for example, you will see a yellow sticker that says "Octane by R + M / 2".

In Europe, they only report the RON. You may hear people discussing that in Europe, the octane is higher. Well, that is not exactly true. You see, in Europe, you might find 96 octane at a local gas station. Well, that 96 is equivalent to 92 in North America. There are stations here that sell 94 octane with is roughy equivlant to 98-99 in Europe. Many larger cities, especially those with stations near drag strips *L*, sell 100 octane which would be equivalent to that German 106 rating.
