Default Album art display....

Is the album art for CD's/ipod tracks only displayed if the cover is in the Gracenote system? I downloaded a couple of album's on itunes, along with cover art, and it is not displaying when I play it.

I thought it was a combination of Gracenotes and what was embedded in the MP3's ID3 tags?

Interesting. I'll have to find out why the mp3's on my iPod are not registering with the car's system. They sure are on the iPod itself, as the cover art always displays when the songs are played on the player.

For some reason, the car is not recognizing many of them. Relatively minor, compared to the rattle I'm dealing with, of course.

I had a similar problem. I transferred much of music library onto a USB stick. I learned a couple of things. The cars audio system will not recognize music files with a high bit rate (approx > 400 Kbps, I can no longer remember the actual number). Thus I had to re rip many of my music files with a max quality of 192 Kbps. Then I found that for some reason the album art did not always show, even though it showed in Windows Media Player and iTunes, something to do with the various formats of ID3 tags. I used the program MP3Tag and for each album I had to check the ID3 tag and add the album art where it was missing. Took a long time! However I now have a USB stick with over 400 albums, all with album art. I prefer this to using my ipod because when using my ipod it is not possible to easily search my library from the Comand Unit. Using the USB stick the Comand Unit has an alphabetic index, and you can simply choose the first letter of an artist's name, name of the track or name of the album. Much faster to use.

I must say I find this Comand Unit a joy to use.

Thanks for that info. Yeah, I'll have to probably do that as well....check the ID tags and add them all manually...though I'm not sure I will have the same patience that you did! I have nearly 145GB of music already on my iPod and that is gonna take FOREVER.

I do not have the program Mp3Tag....do u know if it's free? Can I try to tag the tracks through iTunes instead?

I agree that the Comand's audio interface is very good. In comparison, I found the BMW's iDrive to be a royal pain.

Yes MP3Tag is free, although there is a voluntary donation request. Just type the name into Google and you will be taken to the download site. Maybe there is a more automated way to update the ID3 tags, but I did not find one. Perhaps someone might chime in.

Thanks....I'll play around with iTunes when I get home later and will dl MP3Tag as well.

Hey, one thing I don't understand: if the iPod displays the cover art when the song plays, it obviously has been "tagged" with the cover art, right? How come it doesn't display the art that way in the SLK, since the same iPod is playing the song? I guess I don't see why I'd have to "re-tag" it through another program.

Unless, of course, the iPod does not transmit the tag information when playing to an external source, like through the SLK? Then my next question....how will tagging through MP3TAG fix that issue?

LOL - Steve Jobs is the new Bill Gates. Seriously - iTunes does not actually re-write the ID3 album art tag, it simply appends the metadata to the iTunes Database - so your iPod, iPod, or anything else that uses iTunes "sees" the album art, but it's not actually in the tag.

Naturally there's a couple of caveats - the above is assuming that you are using iTunes to add the album art by the "find album art" function. In most cases this is "better", as the ID3 method adds the art to every MP3 - hence increasing the size of *every* mp3. The iTune method simply links the artwork to the song, and does not embed it.

There is a way to force iTunes to do this for you - select all the songs in an album, go to properties, and drag the album art to the box on teh properties window. When you click "update", you'll notice a pretty huge delay as iTunes writes out the ID3 tag.

Interesting Geek Trivia - the ID3 metadata is stored at the beginning of an MP3 - so when you "add" the album art, you actually are re-writing the entire MP3 - with the album art in the beginning, and each file will increase in size by the size of the image inserted... :P

Very good info, thanks! And yeah, I've noticed that sometimes...when trying to edit details for songs in iTunes. Some audiobooks I've downloaded don't come with an Album Name, so I have to highlight all the tracks and name them....and it takes awhile to update.

I wonder if I will be able to do this though, since you say it will increase the size of the mp3. My iPod is just about out of space...so this may put it over the edge!

I will try this all out later....

Unfortunately, this doesn't work for me. I went into an album I downloaded on itunes and when I click on the songs in itunes itself and go into GET INFO, I see the album art jpeg in there already. But when I play the album in the SLK on my iPod, the album art doesn't show up.

So, I tried to go into "properties" in the file itself in the folder, as you suggested....but I see no place to drag the album art. And when I try to drag the jpeg anyway, it prevents me from dragging it into any space to do with the file....the circle with the bar through it comes up. When I click on ID-TAG, it says "powerpack required for ID editing"

UPDATE: Still having issues. I was able to add album art to some songs by following these tips in iTunes:
http://www.onetipaday.com/2006/12/31...-using-itunes/

I even downloaded MP3TAG and when I click on the songs I added album art to, the jpeg even shows up in the box.

But yet still, the album art is not showing up when I play them in the SLK.

I think unless it's in the Gracenote system, it ain't gonna show up.

Oh well.

My 2011 Lexus IS with navigation system shows "no data" when playing a CD. Album art would be nice, but song title should be minimal. I had a four year old Pioneer AVIC-Z3 in another vehicle that did both. Another plug for aftermarket systems.

There are some good tools to help you get the metadata correct from online databases without having manually enter the titles.

They can also help batch process files if you need to downscale the quality. I tend to rip in FLAC, then you have a near perfect quality copy of the CD, a bit like a master tape.

I then batch convert to mp3 in a different folder. iTunes only looks at the mp3 folder and syncs that with my ipod. You could have different mp3 settings (in different folders) depending on the player you are using (ie limitations on bit rate, storage size or art work).

I use http://www.dbpoweramp.com/ because I found I got reliable results and the settings are easy to use.

Another plug for DBPowerAmp - excellent product, and I do the exact same as you by the sound of it - archival quality lossless FLAC, ripped to VO bitrate MP3's for the iDevices.

Back on topic, it very well may be that the COMAND head when using an iPod is not capable of displaying album art unless the song is recognized in Gracenotes - I know the head does support the ID3 tags, and will display album art from an USB device.

An easy way to confirm this would be to find an album that does display album art, and then go in and either change or remove the art in iTunes - if it still displays in COMAND, then you have an answer!! ;-)

Thinking about this - really does not make a lot of sense with regard to other reported iPod weirdness. I may download some of the iPod interface specifications to read on my little 10 hour jaunt down to Rio! ;-)

Thanks, John! Yeah, I am sure that a USB stick would have no probs showing a song's album art on the SLK (user SLACK says it worked for him in the above posts), but I don't think it works with the iPod, for whatever reason. Seems the car just reads the song data and ignores the rest?

I tried for hours last night, and made sure the songs I tested were tagged with the artwork. I went into MP3TAG and loaded some songs that I had previously tagged and sure enough, the album art showed up in the lower left hand corner in MP3TAG when I clicked on it. So, it was definitely tagged independent of iTunes. But when I walked over to the SLK, reconnected the iPod, and played the song....no album art.

UGH!

Who knows...maybe the SLK requires very specific JPEG resolutions? No idea. Maybe it only shows up when you have the dimensions JUST right?

There has to be a way to do this!

I ripped all my CDs the same way to my USB thumb drive and only some of the albums display album art on the SLK. So I think it only uses the Gracenote database for cover art.

Guys - silly question here - but doesn't iTunes use Gracenotes to find album art?!

yes it does use gracenote, I had a play with that mp3tag thing this afternoon and no matter what mp3 track I tried a search against to find the proper tags / art etc, it just came back with loads of matching album names, none of which were the correct one so not much use really other than for quickly manually editing the titles / filenames etc yourself, bit tedious when you have 65k tracks........ (I will be right on that job) NOT!

I am pretty sure this is true. I did everything I could and tagged the songs I tested with the cover art and they still didn't display.

One way I am pretty sure of this is that I downloaded an obscure techno mix CD from iTunes, and its cover art displays on my iPod. I also downloaded a Primus CD from iTunes.

The Primus album cover showed up in the SLK (being more popular) and the techno mix album art did not.

The only explanation is that it is not in the Gracenote database. The techno songs also showed up as having cover art when I loaded them into MP3TAG, so I think this proves that tagging a song with cover art will not translate over to the SLK (unless, of course, it is in the Gracenote database).

By the way, is there any way for the Gracenote database to update on its own, or would I have to take the SLK in for an update? That is...if a new album comes out now, will it be in the database on the car? I don't know how it would update....unless it dials in through the car's satellite or something? I am clueless on this.

As far as using an USB stick instead, well....I have 145GB of music already on this iPod. Not practical for me to switch right now. I may, however, use a USB stick in the future...since this iPod is nearly full.

Try playing your obscure Techno album in Windows Media Player - that uses Gracenotes as well....
