| Thanks, Interesting to hear the cars were all but one faster with the top down. it's funny the crossfire is the SLK chassis yet it's last.

| There is more drag though. It's not massively different but fuel consumption seems to increase about 5-10% with the top down so that's got to be having a similar effect on performance. Also you would expect the steel roof to stiffen the structure when it's up, improving handling precision. I find that part of the video hard to believe. |

| I can tell you from experience that top up is the way to go. It felt like there was very little downforce on the rear with the top down.

| For the R170, the way is top down.. the car is much more balanced and looses the going straight tendency is sharp bends. And about the drag and fuel consumption, frankly who cares? I bought a roadster to be able to drive top down, not up... if it would have been the case, I would have bought a coupe... |

| For the past 14 months, I have driven my car topless most of the time. As a matter of fact, I only put the top up when it rains and when the temperature is inferior to -5ºC/23ºF. So far, I haven't seen any significant increase in petrol-consumption when the hood is down. I suppose huge square American cars of the 50's and 60's with roomy back-seats consumed more with the top down due to a greater change in aerodynamism but a small carefully designed car such as the SLK with ultra-aerodynamic lines cannot be that much more petrol-greedy when driven with the top down. But I am no expert. Just a guy who's madly in love with his car! ![]() |
