Default Why doesn't my AM radio work?

Hey all,

I'm in the middle of installing a new alpine 505 in my car.

I had a stock non nav unit and it didn't get AM. It had gotten soda spilt on it prior to me owning it. The MB dealer said it was in an accident even though it's not on it's record. Anyway... I never got AM before, thought it was the radio, the new radio doesn't get it either?

anyone know what the cause could be?

Sounds like the antenna? Did you have the stock whip or a R170 / SL mod?

Do you have an 18 inch antenna on the left rear fender outside the car (original), or do you have a short 4 inch (mod) antenna there? Some of us have replaced our original antenna with a short one, for looks.

The 18 inch "whip" is OEM. It is not uncommon for the antenna cable to come unscrewed, especially if anyone at a car wash eever tried to take it of...

In the trunk, you can remove the access panels on the driver's side, and there is a small hole behind them. There is just enough room to get your hand and a light in there. Make sure the cable is still attached. It screws on the inside bottom of the antenna, just like a coax cable into a tv...

I know exactly what your talking about now, I have the original long one, where can I get the shorty? also I had to use (took me ove an hour to find it) that access panel to disconect and tap into my drivers side rear brakelight to work with my wind resistor. I will play with is first chance I get.

Could it be a cable problem between the radio and the antennae at all? ( i don't know much about cars)

I remember I got rear ended once years ago in a hyundai sante fe, ever since then, the AM was screwy, but the FM always worked fine, just like the SLK now.

It's my wifes car and she'll never touch AM, but I'm a nerd and listen to talk radio quite a bit and I'm hooked on it in my lexus so I'd love for it to work.

It could be a problem with the booster.

It takes all the different frequencies picked up by the whip and splits them into logical groups, command and control signals from the remote are sent to the rear SAM, GSM frequencies go to the linear compensator and AM/FM goes to the tuner.

If you have a fault in that bit of kit then perhaps the signal sent over the coax to the tuner is too weak for it to lock on.
