Default Fuel tank capacity - 70 litres / 9 litre reserve.

So...I'm confused.

Depending on what reviews / stats you read the tank capacity for an R171 SLK is 70 litres with a 9 litre 'reserve'.

What does this mean?

Does it mean when I get down to zero miles range on the computer I've actually got 9 litres of fuel left?

What does a 'reserve' tank actually mean?

Clarification would be good!

Cheers!

The reserve is whats left when the fuel warning light comes on.

Cool. So, just to make sure I'm crystal on this - when the "reserve fuel" orange light comes on (which for me is normally around 35 miles) I've got 9 litres to go?

Sorry if that's a dumb question!

Yeah but you probably wont be able to use all of that because you get that bit of capacity below the inlet or thats on the wrong side of the slosh barrier, factor it for say 7 ltrs when the light is on.

Yeah, I figure I have 1 1/2 US gallons left when the light comes on which means the way I drive the 55 it's time to find a gas/petrol station FAST!!!

With modern fuel system in vehicles being under pressure, I don't think it wise to drive to the point where the warning light comes on. I read somewhere that if the fuel tank goes to empty and air gets in the fuel line, it is difficult (PIA) to prime the fuel lines. Is this accurate info?

If you drove it to a stall then yeah would have air in the lines and it would have to be forced out by the pump so thats stress it could do without, it's the sediment that concerns me because it sits just waiting for the tank to run low and the pump to suck it up and send it on the way to the engine.

hmmph. Doesn't the fuel line always suck from somewhere near the bottom of the tank? So sediments would always be a risk?

No not right at the bottom, its a lift pump and it uses the fuel for cooling so it likes to keep as much fuel around it as possible.

The muck is right at the very bottom, the last place the pump can take fuel from, remember its not like a water pump with a single intake it can take fuel from multiple levels.
