Unhappy What can it be?

So I let my sister take the car out today and she calls me and tells me the trunk won't open. To make matters worse, the top won't go down either, furthermore, the instrument cluster warns her the third break light is out. I checked it out and it is as she said. I unlock the door and the trunk won't open, I tried to pop it using the remote, nothing. When I tried to open the top, it would give me an error telling me to close the trunk, which it is. Has anyone had a similar issue and have a quick fix, or would I have to bring it back to my dealership for a diagnostic?

If it's still under warranty I would definately suggest taking it to the dealer. Even if it's something minor, trying to get the trunk open on your own may cause damage to either the trunk or roof mechanisms. It may be something as simple as a piece of clothing or paper stuck in the mechanism or in the little latch that the boot latches into to let the car know it's ok to put the top down, but if you can't open the trunk trying to force it open could be bad.

Remove the emergency key and insert it into the trunk lock and rotate it toward the release button while depressing it, that will manually release the lock to open the trunk.

The warnings your getting sound like damage has occurred to either the SAM module or the wiring harness from the trunk to the module, a visual inspection will reveal any major damage but a repair will be a dealer job.

That sounds like a good idea and thank you cousjcc for your suggestion as well. I'll try it out and if worse comes to worse I'll bring it back to the dealer. I hope it is covered under my warranty because it doesn't sound cheap to fix.

It's not, and if your car is under warranty it should be covered. The roofs rarely seem to go wrong other than minor squeaks, but when they do, they are not cheap to fix.

Ditto that, provided the damage was not caused by yourself / your sister then it will be covered under the warranty.

Say the harness is damaged inside the trunk lid for example that would be covered but if something has sliced into the harness as it comes down the arms and its not a failure of a car part that caused it then its not covered.

It could also be the SAM as i said or perhaps a broken ground lug since the trunk parts share one.

I had my friend check all fuses and all the wiring. He said no fuses were blown and all wiring is in place. So I'll be making an appointment this coming Monday to check it out. Thank you guys for all your advice.

A fair amount of it is hidden, as far as i am aware nothing in the trunk is fused.

I guess my point is i would be inclined to use it as little as possible until the dealer has a look just to be on the safe side, i always worry about wiring issues being shorts and creating more problems when they are left.
