Default Gear lever leather cover..

Hello.
how complicated replacing the leather cover over the gear lever.
Like to take it out and match the stiching with red to match the interior

Mazeka,

a search of the forum will produce this entry from Dan:

1) Put the shifter into N
2) Grab the driver side of the leather covering and push it to the passenger side (It will release)
3) Lift the leather cover and turn the release key on the shift lever
4) Pull the shift knob and leather cover up and they will pop off the lever

Is there a reason to put the shift lever on Neutral (N)? Is it just for ease of removal because of the angle of the shift lever?

The reason I ask is I was able to remove the grear shift knob using the above procedure but with the transmission on P. I was looking for a way to remove the #$%^! blank piece of aluminum on the 55 gear shift knob.

Its just habit for me to put the shifter into N before going to remove the covering since I'm normally in the process of removing a dash and we have to disconnect the battery to do that so the shifter becomes locked and if its locked in P we can't remove the cubby/lighter and the AC controls.

If your just removing the shifter then you can omit the N part.

A non-AMG shift knob will fit (e.g., from the 350, 280/300 with the 7G auto transmission). I inquired from parts department; however, MBUSA will sell it as an entire assembly only, ie., gearshift knob assembly with the leather shift gear cover; cost about $260.

Is that UK or US/EU side for driver/passenger? Push to the right or left?
