Our registrations change more so its not a case of only being able to resister at certain times but some people like to wait for the new plates to come out.

It's not a perfect match to the calender year.

Ahh, sort of like our US gov't fiscal year which begins on October 1 not Jan. 1. Thanks.

The resale values of cars are affected by the plate they are registered with (which denotes the year and now the half year they are registered). However, it is not as much as they used to be when they only changed the plates once a year. The next change is in Sept.

I can afford to wait the extra month as I am already driving a SLK 350 albeit LHD so I am not missing out on anything.

Why am I buying in the UK? Well my work has taken me back to the UK for at least 18 months and so there is a good chance I will settle back here, especially as my wife has managed to transfer to the uk office of her company and will be joining me in Jan. I am not totally comfortable driving a foreign registered car here for a long period as I could run into insurance problems especially as it is in my wifes name. However one thing I will miss greatly is getting away with speeding. I have lost count the number of times I have been flashed and even when stopped nothing can be done. One of the great benefits of having a foreign registered car and a foreign licence in the UK - there is just not a lot they can do as long as I dont venture into criminal territory such as dangerous or reckless driving and not break the limit too much. Does not apply in other European countries though and so I have to watch my speed there.

:-) I know the feeling - I spent the first month or so over here with my France regg'd car and license - was fun getting flashed. Never got stopped, though.

Worth thinking about a TomTom with a "safety" camera subscription - it's saved me a load.

Speaking of which - you down in Greenwich? I saw a LHD silver SLK parked on the side of the street the other day, but couldn't see where it was from?

Not me. I can usually be found pottering around the M25 from Chertsey to the M4
