| I posted this on Benz world too... OK I called a mechanic today (non dealership type) and asked his opinion of the 06 280 SLK. He said they're still under Chrysler at that point so expect electrical problems, but solid mechanically. He did mnetion it was a pretty new car and hadn't seen many come through with issues of any kind. Anyone have any annoying electrical problems? He said it could get expensive.... I was glad to hear they were solid mechanically.... |

| :-) There's not that I'm aware of. The knowledge and parts transfer was almost 100% in the opposite direction, where Chrysler was given access to basically everything they could get their hands on from MB. Look at the Crossfire - lots of pieces from the R170, chassis included. But to answer the question - no, I'm not aware of any significant electrical problems with the SLK, and I did quite a bit of research before I picked mine up. The car (like almost all high end "modern" cars) is loaded with electronics, and when something does go wrong, the parts can get expensive - it is a $55k car after all. I'd go back to your mechanic and ask if there was anything specific he was worried about. I opted to take some of this risk "up front" and paid a bit more to get a CPO'd car, not due to any particular defect or worry, just to give myself piece of mind. The forums here are pretty extensive, and if you opt for subscription membership, you get access to a couple of more with loads of detailed troubleshooting, etc. knowledge in them. By the way, the 280 will be a blast running around Lake Travis - trust me ![]() Last edited by UK-C200; 07-07-2008 at 02:54 PM. |

| If thats what the mechanic told you then i suggest you find another mechanic (for an 06 car it should be a dealer), if he can't even get the brand right then i dread to think what would happen once he gets his hand's on the auto's flesh. Merc electronics aren't great but the general rule for normal function is - Left alone Proper service and care is 99% of the battle, having a local 'friendly' mechanic work on a car like the SLK will do you more harm than accepting the more 'corporate' dealer environment.

Good to hear there are no Chryler parts on these....what a relief!! The mechanic was a german auto mechanic for mercs and stuff...thought he would give me a more honest answer than a dealer who might be more interested in selling me a car....seeing as I am in the market. UK-C200....I am looking forward to cruisin arround the Lake....sounds like youv'e done that? Great area...wish I could live up there. Too far to commute to work....at UT. Thanks all....I 'm feeling better and better about getting a 280...just have to find one in this area and in my price range!!! J

My brother is living in Austin now, and I go up and visit him as often as I can - he's got a '07 MX-5, and we enjoy cruising around the lake any chance we get. One of my "ok, it's time to get an SLK" moments was a trip earlier this year where a friend of mine and I took his 280 up from the hill country back into Austin, and then spend the afternoon cruising around the lake before ending up at Carlos and Charlies for the sunset. Needless to say, I can't wait to take the SLK up to visit. Here's a memory of awesome times in years past....

| Awesome sunset... I live up near the Arboretum so unfortunately my drive doesn't have as many scenic choices...although 360 is nice. Yeah Austin is an amazing place...came here from the East Coast....quite a nice change...though I do miss the seaons. Nothing like taking a car out for a spin in the snow....and they usually do spin. Don't miss it enough to go back. Great place for a convert. Thanks for the sunset pic...hope you get a chance to take the SLK for a spin here. I hear the Oasis has a great view too. Haven't been yet. |
