UPDATE on Universal Media Interface

I received the UMI cables (iPod, USB & AUX) from local dealer. This is what I tested so far:

iPod connection works but buggy - selections don't work instantly and iPod crashed multiple times (latest iPod nano... maybe iPod issue?!?).
iPhone does not recognize connection (accessory not supported message).
Video does NOT work from iPod or iPhone as Mercedes announced (software update for COMAND?!?).
Tried USB connection with iPod (same as direct iPod cable).
AUX (audio) connection works perfect as expected.

So far I am not impressed but hope a future software update will remedy all above issues.

The COMAND manual states that the following iPods are supported only:

iPod mini
iPod nano 1st Gen
iPod 4th Gen
iPod 5th Gen

That might explain the erratic behavior of my new nano.

AND Digital Rights Management (DRM) content is not supported via USB storage drives.

I've got a standard Scandisk 8gb MP3 player with USB 2.0 interface. The Universal Media Interface cables come with a USB port? If so, will the USB port accept any MP3 player? Any info there? Thanks in advance! My '09 Slk 350 will be here by the end of July and if I HAVE to I'll buy an Ipod, but I don't like them.

No issues with my old 30g iPOD

Off topic but I agree. The ipod sound quality is very crappy in comparison to other mp3 players. Unfortunately, it's so universally recognized, that even I got one.

Mercedes offer a USB adapter cable that might work with your player. Not sure about that.

I just copied some folders from iTunes library (directories sorted by artists in AAC .MP4 files) and it worked perfectly. You can copy files (via MMC card or burn CD/DVD with MP3) to the 4GB Hard Drive in the COMAND and play it from there too.

Hmm, is the 4gb memory standard even if you don't get the Multimedia package? I didn't bother with multimedia option because I don't need the navigation stuff, been drivin 13 years all over the country just fine

. And the added wattage on the stereo seems a waste since the stock stereo sounds great.

If it's got 4gb built in memory I could easily store the 500 songs or so that I would want out of my collection in the car anyway.

Thanks for the responses, hopefully the MB usb adapter will recognize my MP3 player so I don't have to get a different one.

You only get the internal memory with Comand/nav, otherwise you get zero.

No biggie, ordering the female USB adapter if it doesn't come with the car. It was manufactured after May '08 though so according to the other thread it should

No need for the internal mem just gonna throw a thumb drive in there.
