So that's what it's for and I thought it was decorative mainly. Amazing what that little thing can do. And yes, I remember the horizontal ribs/grooves on the tail-lights. I wonder why MB changed it, maybe it's no longer the fashion/trend.

I have read that you can apply a little heat with a hair dryer and then slide some dental floss behind it and kind of floss it off.

I have also read that the original purpose was some legislation in some country that said the car had to be a certain width around the tires or some such. So rather than redesign the car, the added the wings. Sounds like something that could happen.

I'm not sure those little ears really do anything to enhance the look of the car and probably do very little to deflect dirt/ stones, etc. I have them on my car and have gotten pretty used to them, but they do look like an add-on or a band-aid of sorts to pass U.S. or other countries regs. When I had a spoiler put on at a local bodyshop, the owner commented on how nice my car was. He even noticed some of the cosmetic mods I did like the clear side markers. He did, however, say to me, "who added those little plastic things behind the wheels?" When I told him the car came that way, he seemed a little surprised. Probably because they look like an add-on. He recommended that if I wanted to take them off, to use a heat gun, heat it up a little and just peel them off. He discouraged using dental floss at all and didn't think it would be necessary. He said if it is wiggled too long in one place, it could marr the paint finish. I haven't done it yet, but that was his advice.

To keep "mud and stones" from affecting the tailights whas what they told me at Sindelfingen when I picked up my car during Euro delivery. I asked them as they looked curious to me too.

Yeah the old "ribbed for more pleasure" taillights fell out as they weren't fashionable. Look at the tiny 1 inch square most Euro cars had as breaklights during that time, on the Autobahn even, and clearly Benz is the only company that really sweats tailight safety.

I took mine off last night. peeled them off, cleaned the adhesive off with WD-40, washed with detergent, then car shampoo, then waxed it, can't tell there was ever anything there. i like it much better.

Got them on my UK 2007 SLK200 I picked up a week ago.

Problem is someone has scuffed them so I need to touch up one of them

It may be easier to remove them.

On the contrary, the "pig ears" saved the rear quarter panel from damage. It is easier to touch-up the small extensions than deal with paintwork damage on the body panel itself.

Bringing back an old thread.
My new USA 09 SLK 350 did not come with these little mud guards and I notice that the rear fenders behind the wheels get dirtier than my old SLK 280 did (which had them). Anybody have a pair of white ones they want to get rid of?
