Ikarus,
I wasn't trying to unfair, only trying to clarify her point in the video. You may be right, at the time of the review it may not have been well known.
It's probably not well released due to safety concerns... To paraphrase a good friend of mine.

"This will transform the 55 into a 1960's muscle car...If you shut off the ESP, Traction control and BAS...you can make your car perform antics that the other drivers next to you will not appreciate (Spoiled sports)...

The Traction control, ESP, and ABS come in handy....I took it off one
time...if you lose it...you have lost it.

With everything on...you can pull 1.9+ G's in curves no Problem.....With it off it becomes a balancing act...that you will not want to lose".

Does this make sense?

Interesting advise and comments so far with no negatives yet. Seems like everyone is enjoying there slk's. I looked at a few members pics and the cars look NICE. When the time comes I would definitely look at this car first. Keep the comments and advise coming...

OK, I'll give you a negative. The radio antenna is too long. That's it!!!

I do have 2 things that I don't like about the car , but that could be related to what I used to with other cars (Civic, Audi, Lexus or BMW).

The wiper control is not the usual type you see which is on the right handside of the steering wheel, you flip it up or down to enable it for different speed and pulling it back for the windshield fluid. As for the R171, you need to turn (rotate) the handle instead and also push the end of the handle to get windshield fluid, instead of justing pulling back the handling. All I am saying it is not as convenience to get the wiper to do sth where most cars will have a separate control handle for just that purpose. As I only have the R171s (350 before and 55 now), I don't know if other MB model is the same, I find it very inconvenient at the beginning, but sort of getting used to it now.
The second thing is about the highbeam. If you want you highbeam to stay on, you need to turn the light switch all the way to the right, otherwise the highbeam will not stay on even you push the light handle forward.

That said, these are very minor things about the car. If you ask me to pick between the available convertible car as of today(within my financial capacity) I will make the same decision without a second thought about the 350 and 55. Both are great cars, style, handling, the sound of both V6 and V8 and the hardtop covertible, that is hard to beat. It is a harder decision now between the facelift 350 and 55 as the 350 has 300 horse which is not much less than the 55, but with even better gas milage than the pre-facelift 350.

Good luck on your search for your upgrade.

Before this turns sour let's clear this up.

We are talking about a Mercedes Benz roadster here and the hint is in Mercedes Benz, typically the car's they build are autobahn cruisers built to go stupidly fast in a straight line so cornering ability does not come into the equation.

With the SLK they have outdone themselves and the limiting factors when it comes to handling abilities are weight and CoG, they are a bit on the heavy side because of the high strength shell and the luxuries built into them and the CoG is higher than it would be in a coupe of similar size because of the vario-roof, but MB have put in so much effort into the dynamics of the car that it will match any other car of similar size, layout and weight in handling ability, then if i bring the huge power output into play you get a car that can maintain it's lead in corners and extend it in straights.

You need a realistic view of what this car is and what it can do.

If you intend to drive this car on a track against car's built for the track then you will be disappointed, if you intend to drive it sportingly on a road and on a track against other road car's you will be very pleased, if you only intend to drive it on normal roads then an S class is capable of doing the job just as well as a Porsche 911.

I don't know if it's a negative (could be positive for some): people tend to stare at you and your ride (could be the other way around) and this makes me uneasy/squimish

The other day, I noticed three cars slowing down to almost 0 mph, while I was giving the car its usual wash on the driveway. I didn't notice this right away as my back was turned.

I also had, on more than 2 occasions, drivers roll down their windows at a traffic stop, asking me how much I paid and complimenting the vehicle and giving sign.

Steering problems? I never read that and never experienced that. I had an '05 SLK350 and bumped to a 55. The power from the SLK55 is just RIGHT.

As far as the chic car goes. I've never heard that one either. Maybe its because I'm 6'2" and 235lbs and still train in some MMA circles! Go figure!

I think vicky didnt drive the SLK well, she was bouncing all over the track and complaining about the seats and steering wheel.

Almost 2 years and 25k on the clock with no regrets here. The SLK55's strong suit is it's ability to do ALL things well, even without leading the pack in any one particular area. It's a much more well rounded car than it's other 'vert competitors IMO, which makes for a very satisfying daily driver IMO. I've taken it to the track, weekend getaways, daily grind back and forth to work; hard top coupe in inclement weather, drop top convertible for sunny drives, and it draws more attention than is sometimes comfortable *L*. It does it all, what more could you want - I'm more than happy with ours.

"DansSLK" well said that explains a lot of what I been reading. To all the SLK owners I am definitely not looking to bash the car as I like it a lot. I am just looking for some opinions from owners. Who else to ask for better advise? "someone who drives it and owns the car or a test driver driving it once". Again I appreciate all your post and hope to become an SLK owner.

A disadvantage I find in the R171 SLK,
is that there is a lack of leather dashboard and other appointments in the interior

I agree with Mohammed here. in that the interior of the 171 could use some improvement. I also have a W203 C320, and its interior is elegant compared to my SLK 280. But the SLK interior is fully functional, and it is a sports car, so I should not complain as some sports car interiors aren't even functional.

I test drove an 06 SLK55 AMG before I purchased my 07 SLK350. I have nothing against it, I just decided to save a few bucks by getting the 350, and load up on all packages and all the options/accessories that I wanted.

The new style includes split bumper and smaller antenna. Test drive one, then buy it if you like it. You won't regret it.

Heavier than an MX-5.. but I'm assuming that you don't have the new PRHT MX-5, so the SLK's folding roof will be something you will appreciate.

That's standard mercedes, after driving numberous toyotas, lexus, cadi's, and benz, i've found it the most convenient...but takes some time to get used to.

Something is wrong with your car, as long as the light is set on auto OR the far right and you push the lever forward, it should click into place and hold the high-beams.
