Default Grateful newbie

Bought my 05 SLK earlier this week. Just wanted to say hi, and thanks for all the great, detailed information I found here. Just did the membership thing to support the site. You've got a great group here.

I managed to get my SmartTop installed yesterday, which wouldn't have happened without all the geat information here. And is it just me, or does everybody just want to put the top up and down remotely after you first install SmartTop?

Yeah, I did. Just don't kill the battery

It's especially nice driving up to a light and dropping the top while in motion. You can see people going thru a range of thoughts....

"OMG, look at his trunk! It's bent the other way and about to rip off!"
"Wait a sec. What the hell is happening?!"
"OMG, did you see what just happened?! It transformed!"
"Wow, that's a nice car."

and for other convertibles out there...

"I wish my car was a hardtop convertible."
or
"I wish I could raise/lower the top in motion."

Yeah... the smart-top module makes it fun.

Welcome and Thank you Billh556 for supporting this site.

Same here with the SmartTop module. Are you planning to do the R170 antenna modification? Green Air Filters?

The CANBUS cover may be easier to deal with by using the following method (learned through trial-and-error on 5 installs, three 55, one 350 and one 280):

1. Look at the CANBUS cover closely after sliding the CANBUS assembly (cover and connectors) up from its seat inside the wiring harness. You will notice two small slots (about 1/2 cm wide) near the central part of the CANBUS cover. This is where you will insert an extra small flat-head screwdriver later to release the cover.

2. Insert flat wooden sticks to sides of the CANBUS cover to release the locking tabs. I used the flat wooden coffee stirrers from the coffe shop. Make sure you cut the wooden sticks to the same width as the sides (0.5 cm) and insert them well into the sides of the CANBUS cover.

3. Next trim the length of the wooden sticks so they're the same height as the entire CANBUS assembly. You may want to mark the stick with a pencil and trim the length of the stick AWAY from the whole CANBUS assembly, to avoid the risk of cutting any wires accidentally. Reinsert the trimmed wooden sticks to the sides of the CANBUS cover and tape the lower portion of the stick against the lower body of the CANBUS assembly using masking tape. Make sure you don't tape the CANBUS cover.

4. Insert an extra small flat-head screwdriver unto the slots as mentioned in no.1 above. Gently pry and gradually slide the screwdriver towards one side of the CANBUS cover, while using the index finger of the other hand to simultaneously lift the side of the CANBUS cover that you're working on. The lift direction is towards the broader side of the assembly and not towards the top of the assembly. CANBUS cover should release on one side. Once one side is released, the other side should lift off easily.

Option: You may elect to cut off/route off the locking tabs (tabs that point towards the center) in the CANBUS cover once it is removed. This will make removing the cover easy for the future by just using the fingers.

thanks eddy. i remember your instructions from the previous time. i had a brain cramp when i said is it any easier thinking the newer version would change the effort on the canbus which remains the same. i guess i have to remember to lift 'forward' and not 'up'.

Just a word of caution on using SmartTop (operating the roof) with the vehicle moving: while it can be programmed up to 45kph/30 mph, do so only at parking lot speed 8-15kph/5-10mph on good roads and no speed bumps. There is a risk of throwing the roof off alignment.

This was told to me by MB service advisor and I believe Dan has cautioned on the same.

congratulations on the new ride
welcome to the site
thanks for becoming a support member

Yes, did it about 5 - 6 times after my installation, It is so nice to see it going up and down from standing far way, instead of pointing it to the door which looks silly
