welcome Eddie!! As mentioned in Etyu, it would be better to go with the fuse box route. I was just too eager to install mine and being too lazy to go to the shop and get the proper fuse. I end up crimped the wrong 12V , but quickly find out right "red" wire, thanks to all the previous experience posted here.

In additions to the PDF you downloaded from the site, check out the SLK forum for additional advise and tips for your install, it will make your install much easier and smoother.

Good luck and welcome to the site again!! post some pictures of your ride, we love to see others people's ride

Link to SmartTop install: http://www.slkworld.com/general-modi...07-slk280.html

Check the above thread on ATO add-a-circuit available at most automotive supply places like Pep Boys, AutoZone. I used the MB fuse holder box so it looks OEM (thank you Dan )and isn't readily noiced if the technician opens up the fuse box.

Thank you Snowbyhui. It takes a little time to seek out all the posts (that's not a bad thing, of course), but I think I'm set with all my print-outs now. And etyu, thanks for the link. Just printed the thread and all the photos. Especially like the one of all the parts laid out...VERY HELPFUL! The timing is perfect as I just got off the phone with my wife, letting her know I just got the urge to stop by one of the bigger MB dealerships here to check out their parts department for goodies and such. Stopped by yesterday evening, but they were already closed... The nice lady at the counter gave me a bottled water for the road though, so at least it wasn't a waste of a trip! I should be good with just giving them the parts number you supplied, correct? Forgive me but everything I've purchased from a dealership has been on a shelf in some nice packaging. I just don't want to screw it up by forgetting what the heck I'm there for and walking out with the wrong part. LOL...can you tell I'm ADHD or what?

If you're referring to the fuse holder and contact springs, I'm not sure if they're available from the parts department (as it wasn't at my local MB dealer, even after checking their computer, etc) at least in some parts of the US. If not the ATO add-a-circuit is a good alternative until the OEM MB type fuse box is found.

Yes, that's what I meant. Ok, got it. Sorry...came across that info. in your previous posts after I had asked the question. I'll give it a try since I'm stopping by the dealership anyway. Worst case, I'll go with the add-a-circuit in the meantime. Thanks again for the info!

If the dealer don't have it (fuse box holder and contact spring), shoot me a PM. The service department may have some old spares lying around that the tech may be able to just give one to you, that's how I got my orange one.

I'll check later tonight to see if I kept the orange one in the spares box. Check the fuse assembly on your vehicle and see which spots (position #) are open.

Will do! Thanks! Any generic MB accessories, etc., that I may want to pick up while I'm driving out to the dealership? Not sure if there's anything in particular that might make life in my SLK more enjoyable. Though, that's hard to imagine.

Oh one other question, if I may...what are your thoughts on the Wind Restrictor for the SLK? Look pretty good from what I can tell in the pics I've seen. Better than getting robbed by MB for their's. Not a fan of the mesh one either...I can make that thing myself with an old basketball jersey.

I have the front windshield foam-core type sunshade that is custom made for the R171. Probably around $50. Comes in quite handy during sunny and hot days. Folded up, I store this behind the driver's seat.

The Wind Restictor is a nice one vs the MB OEM Lexan type. It is a good price. If I didn't already have the MB lexan type (bought through ebay), I would have bought one from Windrestrictor with some custom etching. PM Windrestrictor and you'll get a discount for being a SLKWorld forum member. (personal opinion, no relation with WindRestrictor).

rlbawk has one (wind restrictor) and he likes it IIRC. I'm still waiting to see it in person though.

Right on, thanks guys. The sunshade is a good idea, I used to have the custom cut ones for my 2 350Zs. Beleive me in AZ, covering every last inch of the windshield completely is extremely important! Thanks etyu that's precisely the sort of thing I wanted to pick up while I was making the trip. I think I'll likely go with the Wind Ristrictor unless I too can find an OEM deflector for a reasonable price. Appreciate the feedback. Lot's of info. in one day! I think I'm done for the day. Unless the stinkin' SmartTop finally shows up, then I'll be shouting from the rooftops. Hasta la vista everyone.

THE SMARTTOP IS IN! The installation is a go for tonight! Now I just need to pick up all other necessities and make sure I have the needed tools and I'm golden.

Will post again with the results!

If you are thinking to change the whip Antenna to a shorter R170 antenna which is one of the popular mod, you can also try to pick it up when you are at the dealership provided that they have it in stock.

The details can be found

http://www.slkworld.com/general-modi...0-antenna.html

It is a long thread, but very interesting to read.

Take your time on the install Eddie. Have a good light source. Some tools and materials needed:
1. Torx screwdriver
2. Masking tape to cover sharp metal clips after removing the plastic door sill and to hold the wire harness cover in open position
3. Wire stripping and crimping tool for the bullet/butt connectors.
4. Extra small flat head screwdriver for removing CANBUS cover (plus flat wooden coffee stirrers to aid in removing CANBUS cover)
5. Wife or mate, to help hand the tools and hold light source, and for moral support (she may find this endeavor amusing)
6. Patience
7. Coors Light or similar beverage to refresh the spirit after a successful install.

LOL. By the time I hit Radio Shack and AutoZone I was so tired, even the excitement of this thing finally arriving could fuel me. Of course, Saturday was jam-packed with things to do...so, Sunday, between lunch with my Mother-In-Law and having my Mom over for dinner (for Mother's Day), I got to it. About 25 minutes later I was on my third beer (Corona Light, not Coors Light...that's the only item on etyu's checklist I tweaked a bit ) and programming my SmartTop. All the hype I've read has been spot on. Of course, I "had to" run out that evening to pick up some desserts for dinner. I parked as usual, only this time I didn't have to slowly remove my seat belt or tinker with the radio as my other hand was occupied holding the dang knob before I could step out of the car. No, this time I got out, began walking away, and gave the key fob three clicks. I could hear the the top-up process in motion behind me as a I walked toward the store and a couple of people coming out of the store walked past me...I wanted to turn around so badly, but just had to contain myself and keep the "oh that, doesn't everyone's car do that?" attitude going. Anyway, walking back to the car I gave the key fob three click again...and there it was. My top was going down and I wasn't in it or standing 5 feet from it! All this to say THE SMARTTOP IS AWESOME! Thanks again for all the help and advice. I'm ready for the next little project. Actually just e-mailed the MB dealership to order the shorter R170 antenna and already have the other tools needed.

cool! but you can start the procedure, and shut off the engine, and remove the key and it will still close.

Done that several time too...you know, just to mix things up a bit.

Mtiede, yes, it's even more fun than I thought it would be.

Now my little game has been seeing if I can get the top up/down from different locations throughout my house (all while keeping in mind not to drain the battery). It's nice to drive up with the top down, then as I'm putting me watch on in the morning just before leaving for work, give those three clicks. When I step out to the garage...Magic! my top is already down and my SLK is ready to take on the boring-for-most-other-drivers morning commute. I'm telling you guys...I love my car even more with this simple little mod. Anyone searching the forum for SmartTop info., print every last post regarding the SmartTop (expecially those detailing the install) and just know that you HAVE TO get it!

Geez, I always write novels, don't I?
