Default Center Exhaust Resonator?

For those who've removed this piece, is it a heavy item? Much of a weight savings going to an x-pipe?

It is a very heavy item. If I can find my scale, I'll weigh it. I'm guessing roughly 15lbs. I can not recall how heavy the Magnaflow Xpipe was. I'll try to find that too.

I'd recommend getting lighter wheels and tires / brakes and axles / drive shaft and other bits and pieces.... Moving parts past the transmission.

Wheels are already taken care of http://www.slkworld.com/general-modi...aleggeras.html As for the other items, not so easily come by. But I'm aiming for a 100lb weight reduction this year - wheels, spare/tools/junk in the trunk, exhaust, etc. I think that figure, or close to it, should be fairly easily attainable.

Its quiet heavy as I said in numerous other posts, I felt that I removed around 50kg worth of parts in total when combining the weights of the OEM cats, resonator, spare tyre and tools together.

Alroumi,

Can you weigh your removed resonator? I can find mine in the garage. I hope my wife didn't toss it!

Have it in my cupboard, so how do I weight it will a normal weight scale you use to weight yourself be okay or will it provide us with marginally different results?

If i can just suggest titanium or similar for the drive shafts and the suspension components you will reduce a huge amount of weight.

That resonator is heavy for sure considering what it is and its location is nicely suited for a bit of weight reduction without side effects.

Just remember what you remove from the rear you have to remove from the front, it has a big heavy V8 draped over the front end and bugger all at the tail so a lot of the weight built into the car at the rear is vital for proper balance and handling.

At the front end you have the quarter panels and the hood that carry a lot of weight so some lightweight materials will work wonders for them and the roof panel being the high point of the car could do with a nice helping of CF to reduce the overall weight in the middle of the car and help lower that CoG.

Stuff like the toolkit does not count so rip that out by all means but for every job you do to the rear try and balance it out on the front otherwise all you will have for your hard work is a tail happy wheel spinner thats slower than stock.

P.S Good call on the alloys by the way they will make a huge difference being unsprung.

Thanks, and thanks for the pointers Dan! General plan for this year is pretty basic - take off a little weight, and add a little power and see where the car ends up. Nothing real drastic this year as I'm still hedging my bets re an SLK63. So nothing changed that can't be easily changed back, with parts that can be resold if necessary, again depending on what develops with the R172.

P.S. the car is a bit of an understeerer as is anyway, so I can live with a bit of a more lively rear

Sounds like a sound plan to me.

I agree a little more motion at the tail would be nice but in the horizontal not the vertical, once that weight is gone they tend to stick that ass way up in the air and dig a hole, think CL65 with ESP off.

If your going to save for anything I'd go for the roof, almost guaranteed resale.

Dan any thoughts on how much weight savings you get compared to the stock roof? I know it looks sharp also, I've seen some pictures of it through some of the links on this forum.

Alroumi I do have the s/s x pipe I went with the resonator set up first. I should have just odered the s/s exhaust sytem with the x pipe right from the begining. Some money wasted right there bit I didn't know at the time.
