Default ESP Defective, BAS Defective

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post although I have been viewing for a while now. I have a technical question about my SLK350. I took it out tonight to clean out the cobwebs, and had a bit of a 'spirited' drive of about 15 miles. About 5 minutes from home, the cluster display started flashing 'ESP Defective - visit workshop , BAS defective, visit workshop'. Obviously, this is not good. I pulled over and turned the car off. The cluster display then shows '2 Malfunctions' . I start the car, and they go away, and all seems to be well. I have had this happen to me once (and I think it was only the ESP which said it was defective), and I went straight to the dealer with it. They said nothing was wrong, and so I thought it was a one-off glitch. However, this happening again has spooked me, and I don't want to fly off the road when my ESP goes out.

So, my question is, has anyone else had this happen, and if so what was the cause. The car is now over 3 years old and is out of MB Factory Warranty, although I did cough up the £850 for 12 months extended Tier 1 cover from the MB dealer. The car is 10 days away from a Service E, so it has to go in anyway, but should I stamp my feet to get an explanation of what is happening?

Thanks for reading...

It wont go spinning off the road even if the ESP fails, in fact I'd suggest NOT switching the power off until your home because if your car is an auto and the ESP control unit has gone down you will not be able to start the car again or release it from park without dealer assistance.

ESP and BAS could mean a brake / wheel sensor is broken, the steering angle sensor or contact spiral is on its last legs or the control unit could be faulty.

The dealer will know exactly what sensor caused the fault when they put it on the DAS the only exception being the ESP control unit itself that can fail and not log faults but this normally causes CAN Communication faults in other modules and you can diagnose it that way.

I had the same problem with ESP about week ago, I turned the car off, then again on, and everything was ok. Is something broken or was it just a system mistake...??

You do just get errors every now and then for no particular reason.

Dan - thanks for the info. I am having the ESP Malfunction right now - did it a week ago and went away. Then had it stay on with me this morning for an hour-long drive.

Taking it to the dealer tomorrow morning. I recently had the brakes done on it, so based on what you are saying I wonder if it is related to that.

I suspect that ESP sensors may be a bit of a "weak point" on our cars. One of my steering sensors failed at 47 miles on the odo!

I had that ESP and TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING deffective message again, one week ago, twice in two days. I then entered the hidden menu, turned ESP totally off (dyno mode), turned the car off, and again on and it was OK then. I wonder if something is mechanically broken or is it just some electronic stuff...

I assume it is still in dyno mode. Be careful.
