Default Zaino and Vario Roof module working in tandem

I left my car parked outside last night and it rained. This morning was beautiful blue sky weather - perfect for a top down drive to work.

Except I couldn't.

Zaino creates the biggest water beads on the car imaginable. Like a Teflon non stick pan . Because of their size they don't evaporate away very quickly. All the other cars in the street are dry.

This means I can't put the roof down straight away unless I want to flood my trunk again.

Instead, I drive off as fast as possible so they blow off.

Come to the first traffic light then it is a quick tap on the control and the roof drops. Lights change but no problems as the roof continues going down as I drive off.

Zaino and the Vario Roof module - the two of the best products you can buy for your car

Oh i have a solution for you my friends...

I got one of these California Jelly Blades and they are great!

Throw it in the trunk and whenever it rains, or you come out after rain... simply glide this bad boy over the roof and the rear window and you're done!

Their wedsite with videos and examples of use:
http://www.calcarcover.com/product.a...29&source=home

I have the same issue with a nice coat of wax on the car. And have used the Jelly blade for about 2 months. Does not leave scratches as far as i could tell... but please correct me if i am wrong.

Can be picked up at most Auto Parts stores for $15-20 or online.

I always have 2 microfiber cloths in the car, one at each door pocket. One for me to use, the other for the "guest" to use in case she spills something on herself when I go too fast.

mmh. Not sure I would recommend wiping the rain water off with a micro fibre cloth or jelly blade as rain water would contain small particles of dirt and other contaminants. Wiping these around your body work runs the risk of micro scratches.

This is why I don't attempt to wipe the water beads of my car and instead blow them off with high speed driving.

And let's be honest soo much more fun!!!

Though I have the tendency to have my window down to wave to people as I leave and quite often end up with a pool of water landing on me, as it runs off with the Zanio!!!

mcat - have been thinking of getting the Vario Roof Module myself but have been put off cause heard it's a bit of a bind installing it in a right hand drive car. Curious to know how hard/easy you found the install?

Bev, here's a thread on the RHD install: http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r171...ht=RHD+install

Removal of the gas pedal will improve access greatly. Thanks to your prior post on removing the door sill.

Hi Bev, I'm gonna install one in mine in a couple of weeks (when I get back from yet another bike tour (Norway again(I rode round northern europe & scandinavia three weeks ago, and was very impressed by Norway - like Cumbria, but bigger!)), so if I beat you to it, I shall post a load of pics of the installation. (just had to have a 'baaaaaaaaaaaaanana(thanks, Easty))

I was told by Meguires that beading in an undesireable trait because it keeps the dirty water and acid rain on the car's finish. They say a good wax should make the water stream down the hood of the car.

Any professionals to comment?

I've read that beading means that there's enough "wax" protecting the clear coat and when the water doesn't bead, then it's due for waxing. I've also read that when rinsing the car after washing, one should adjust the flow of water from the hose so that it's one smooth stream (laminar flow) and the water should "sheet" right off the finish. this also reduces time needed to dry the car as most of the water has "run off'. (non-professional comment )

Do you know I was just wondering the other weekend if Woolly would have installed one, as I remember you had one on your last SLK. So I think I'll let you beat me to it, as I'm still not a 100% confident about doing it.

Enjoy your touring - am very jealous, can hardly wait till I retire!!!

Bev, didn't you and your Dad installed lighted door sills last year? The vario roof module is 100 times easier than that (it would be 1000 time easier if you had a LHD). Plus you already know how to remove the sill (which is step 1).

Good luck.

That we did, and we didn't even fall out during it!!!

The only thing that really worries me is that I've read for RHD you need to remove either the gas/brake/clutch pedal

I've always been a bit wary of the pedals after a sizeable chunk of the clutch pedal fell off my R170 when I was driving home one day - I nearly went through the roof when it landed on my foot!!!

I can't comment on the right hand drive cars (I live in Switzerland) but it is do'able for the left hand drive ones and there are plenty of really good step by step picture guides in the SLK forums. Not quite the 20mins advertised though for your first go. More like a couple of hours as you get stumped on the canbus block. I could prob do it in 20 mins now.
