Will A Garmin Sat Nav do the Job for Hands Free Phone

Hi.

I have a Standard Audio 20 and while I am happy with the Audio itself I would really like to bring my car into the 21st Century with regards to Bluetooth for Telecommunication & a Sat Nav.

I like the idea of just getting into the car and having the Bluetooth & Sat Nav available without mucking about with wires or making connections so I was looking at the Dynavin as the ideal solution however at this point I really can not justify the £600 for the occasional telephone call or Sat Nav usage.

My next though is to purchase and hardwire a Garmin Drive Smart as this will give me my Sat Nav and Blue Tooth at a much lower cost (I am not keen to clutter my cockpit with 'add ons' however I if I get the position right and subtle cabling I think it will be OK!)

I am sure the Sat Nav in itself will be fine (I have used Garmins before) however my main concern is the quality of the Audio for the Telephone.

For those of you that have similar set up do you find the Bluetooth Telephone Audio to be:-

1) Acceptable for general driving use?
2) Audible/Acceptable to use when the roof is down? (This is very important as I only have the roof up when it is raining!)

I appreciate that a lot of this will be dependent on the location of the Sat Nav and ideally I would place it on the dash somewhere near the steering wheel as I want it to be subtle and not easily spotted so that I can just leave it in the car.

I really appreciate all feedback, comments and experience you may have on this and I guess if the Audio (Speaker or Microphone) on the GPS unit is not up to the task I will have to go for an aftermarket head unit so that I can utilize the cars speaks and dedicated Microphone.

Thanks

Hi have a look at the Pure highway 600 or alpine ezydab bt (both the same inside). i fitted one to my 350 and it is excellent. answer and receive calls (phone set to auto answer). dab radio, streams music from your phone, go neat spotify button as well. I have APS 50 comand so only option to upgrade my audio.

Control module has no wires so it is easy to fit.

Thanks for the feedback Scuba ginty.

I am pretty sure my system does not have an auxiliary input so I do not think that this is an option for me

you can connect over fm as well to the radio. it auto scans to a spare frequency and then displays pure 600 as the station on the radio display. the interface then plays through the radio. It is a very sophisticated bit of kit.

Try this until you make a decision. You may end up sticking with it; I did
Bluetooth to FM transmitter that has music/phone controls, a very good mic for calls and plays all audio coming from your phone.
It's very small, removable and reliable. Has excellent sound for my audio 20.

I like using my phone vice a permanent dash Garmin unit because you can take it with you and there's nothing left on the dash to tempt someone if you leave the top down for a quick in and out at the store. Not to mention that Google Maps is free and arguably the best map/route guidance software available. I have the controller mounted in a spot where it's within index finger distance to operate the fwd/rev/pause buttons on the controller when I have my hand on the shifter. No need to look down at the buttons while driving. The mount is a small metal plate that attaches with 3M tape and the controller has a magnetic back that keeps it firmly mounted to the plate.

I was just going to use this until I found a good head unit replacement, but now have decided that this does everything I need and does it very well. Especially for under $20!

I use a magnetic mount for my phone that keeps it in my sight line as I drive. Great for maps and selecting music and immediately seeing who's calling me. It is also a great place to keep your phone while you drive. Better than your pocket and easier to grab and go than sticking it in the cubby.
