Default Service A - Oil Change Excess

Currently, I have 17,000 miles on my car so I went to change my air filters today and, just for kicks, I also checked the oil level to discover the service technician added too much synthetic oil.

I siphoned out a little more than 2 quarts before the dipstick finally read just below the maximum.

I've been driving the car for almost 2 months now and I noticed that the engine roar wasn't as loud but i didn't think anything of it. Goes to show that just because you pay 300 for a scheduled maintenance doesn't mean it's always better than doing it yourself. Now I wonder if I will bring in my car for Service B ($700) or do it myself.

I would bring this matter to the attention of the service manager.

I definitely will when I find time tomorrow. Furthermore, I checked the oil on a level surface so as not to take an inaccurate reading. Now I wonder what type of damage could or has occurred.

The multifunction display in the instrument cluster will flash a warning if there's an excess of engine oil (based on 2008 owner's manual) namely: "Engine Oil Level, Reduce Oil Level".

Yesh, I have them change my oil when I bring it in for rattles, bad tranny, etc. Not just the service stops. I should go check it.

That's piss poor maintenance on the servicing dealer. I'd make it a point to express my displeasure with the service manager. I had service "B" completed on my wife's SLK about two months ago. Before I left the dealer, I verified that there was oil in the engine (you never know). Once I got home, I verified that it was filled to the proper level, which it was. Even when dealing with authorized factory service and paying $700 plus for scheduled maintenance, I'm going to follow-up.

I had a similar problem when I had my then new 1999 VW NewBeetle back at the VW dealer for service. On more than one occasion, they over filled the engine will oil. The manual specifically cautioned against over filling due to potential damage to the catalytic filter.

If you can't trust the factory dealer with proper service, who can you trust?

Owner's manual, use the index: Engine Oil, Checking Level, Dipstick.

The following is from the 2008 Owner's Manual:

Checking engine oil level with the oil dipstick (SLK 280, SLK 350 only)
When checking the oil level, the vehicle must be parked on level ground.

With the engine at operating temperature, the vehicle must have been stationary for at least 5 minutes with the engine turned off.

With the engine not at operating temperature, the vehicle must have been stationary for at least 30 minutes with the engine turned off.

To check the engine oil level with the oil dipstick, do the following:
Open the hood ( page 294).
Pull out oil dipstick1.
Wipe oil dipstick1 clean.
Fully insert oil dipstick1 into the dipstick guide tube.
Pull out oil dipstick1 again after approximately 3 seconds to obtain accurate reading.

The oil level is correct when it is between the lower (min) mark3 and upper (max) mark2 of oil dipstick1

Default Hay Guys

Hi there folks. I have just joined your group of happy SLK drivers. I am the proud owner of a 2004 slk 200. I was having some problems checking my oil levels, I know now how to check my engine oil and now wondering if anyone can point me in the rite way or as to how I check my transmission oil. It is an auto.
Thanx

No dip stick in the engine bay just a cap on the top of the tube. Been told I need to buy a dipstick from MB but have conflicting stories on how to check. Engine Running or stopped ??

Sorry mate thats what i meant, i should have said dipstick tube.

I'd have to check the procedure for the check, is this just for a general test or are you doing a fluid change? Of course you can never spin the box up without any fluid so your always going to have to get to a certain level with the engine off.

Question

I would like to just check the level now with a view to changing the oil later. I still need to find the grade of oil and the capacity. Any ideas of the part number of the stick I need and to where I might get a service and repair manual (electronic would do) ??
