Default Center Console Light

This seems very strange. I bought a new SLK about a month ago. I noticed that the LED light in the console between the seats and in the console between the seat backs stays on, even when the console doors are shut. I see a microswitch on the console between the seats but it doesn't do anything that I can determine. I brought it back to the dealer and they are telling me that the lights stay on even when the console doors are shut and they don't know what the switch does except that it is hooked into the harness. I don't know why they didn't look at the wiring diagram, but they said they would check it out and get back to me. My question is do these lights go out in anyone else's car? Thanks.

What happens to the light (in the center console) when you turn off the ignition (i.e., key in position 0)? I will check on this later tonight, but as I recall, the light is off when key is not in the ignition. Light may be on when key is in position 1 or 2.

The lights in both consoles are directly connected to the SAM and whenever it applies Circuit 15 voltage (when you turn the key) they activate constantly day/night so long as the key is turned.

The microswitch tells the SAM that the door is closed and its OK to activate the lock when the alarm is primed it also serves as a trigger switch for the siren if the door is forced open.

speaking of mystery lights, isn't there supposed to be a light in the glovebox? Mine doesn't seem to have one/light up. I guess I should look and see if there is even a light but it just came to me while reading this.

Hummmm?

Open the glove box compartment lid and leave it open.
Open the center console lid and leave this open also.
Turn the key in ignition switch to position 1 or 2.
Light (amber LED) should be on in both compartments: glove box and center console.

Blues Brothers

[while standing at the entrance to the Triple Rock church watching the service with much dancing and Hallelujah choruses, a heavenly light shines down on Jake and he has an epiphany]
Jake: The band... the band...
Reverend Cleophus James: DO YOU SEE THE LIGHT?
Jake: THE BAND!
Reverend Cleophus James: DO YOU SEE THE LIGHT?
Elwood: What light?
Reverend Cleophus James: HAVE YOU SEEEEN THE LIGHT?
Jake: YES! YES! JESUS H. TAP-DANCING CHRIST... I HAVE SEEN THE LIGHT!

This was great information, thank you. Yes my lights only go on when the key is turned. If the key is removed the lights go out. So I guess MBZ was correct. Unfortunately they knew nothing about the microswitch and what it activated, it would have saved me a post and all your time replying. Again, thanks.

The SAM's are the Signal Acquisition Module's one front and another rear they activate all of the functions and read in the data from the onboard sensors kinda act like the eye's, ear's and mouth.

In this topic when i said SAM i meant the Rear SAM it has a feed that controls all the cubby lights.

Failing that Sam is the little dude who sits in the trunk with his switchboard switching stuff on and off as you drive along.

On the contrary, posts and questions like this (although it may seem silly in the beginning) and Dan's superb answers that help us understand how things work.
