|  Aftermarket Head Unit After the ridiculous prices being given to me for upgrading to COMAND I have thought about going after market. Visiting my local ICE store today they advised it could not be done at present Have any of you guys managed to put an aftermarket unit into an R171??? |

 | Yeah its easy enough to do. I've not done it personally since i have COMAND but if you do a search on the site you will find others who have installed aftermarket units. You will lose steering wheel control, the remote display on the combi and set a fault code for CAN but that wont effect the network, i would recommend you take it to a very good installer or do it yourself so you know its done right a bad install could cause damage to other parts of the car.

| There are adapters for the steering wheel controls, you will not get any info on the dash screen though (who cares).If you have an audio 20 without any of the HK crap, it is not even connected to the car's optical network (it is plugged in with an industry standard plug). Upgrade your speakers (stock ones are a joke) ,add an amplifier and a decent head unit and you will have a much better system without the Command price tag (which is archaic in terms of ICE technology) . There are excellent offerings from Pioneer for example, like the p88Rs for that audiophile sound (as far as you can get it in a car) or the AVIC series for combined dvd/navigation/tv tuner etc. Mercedes Benz is way behind in its entertainment systems |
