Just noticed that the SLK55 Black has a new stubby aerial instead of the bendy one, anyone know if this is going to replace the aerial on all new SLK's and whether there is a part number yet so it can be retro-fitted

Looks like the one from R170. I hope they've optimize this for the R171 so that the reception or range will be better if not the same as the whip antenna, without the need for an aux ant in the rear bumper.

r170 antenna fits slk 350. i have one.

part number Part No. A 170 820 06 75 i believe. about $58.

I actually have 3 antennae: the original whip antenna, the r170, and the SL (comes pre-painted). The last 2 have decreased range of about 35 feet, while the whip antenna has a range of 150 feet with the SmartKey. I generally use the SL antenna for looks.

Oh I so wish we could find one that works effectively with FM and remote without the need for removing the bumper.

Did you install the antenna extension inside the rear bumper or you just screw the new antenna?

I just screwed on the SL antenna (or for that matter you can use the R170 antenna). It fits perfectly. I do not have an auxiliary antenna at the rear bumper. Reception for FM is adequate depending on where you are on the road.

The SL and R170 antenna will have a much shorter range of about 35 feet or 10 meters when you're using the RF from the SmartKey. With the original whip antenna, the range is 3-5 times more.

The service adviser at MB suggested that I get another antenna base, so I could paint it body color to match the SL antenna not a bad idea, I might just do that). I would keep the black antenna base to use with the R170 antenna or the original whip antenna. I guess you might say, you can change the antenna and its base depending on one's mood for the week/day.
