Question Interior Motion sensor Alarm

I saw that the R171 can be fitted with an interior motion sensor, which is then integrated into the alarm.

Acts as a proximity sensor, so that if anyone reaches into the car, it triggers the alarm.

I think MBenzNL offers the install for around $700, but these sensors are rather cheap on the market.

I was wondering if anyone out there has this option?

Kudos to MB for turning a $30 product and a $100 install into $700.

I'd be interested, although I know nothing about the alarm. Only heard it once when I had the windows down and car locked and opened the car with the door handle.

Yep, thats MB for you. I found a similar sensor on Ebay for around the same price.

I would be willing to do this install, but i need to tap into a "trigger" for the alarm. Such as a door opening, or trunk, hood, tilt... whatever.

I've been testing to see if i could find a trigger, but have had no luck.

But! if the if i was to tap into the door switch (the pushbutton in the door sill) similar to the door sill install, i can trigger the alarm by making it think a door was opened.

Now the only thing that remains is how to activate this entire setup when you lock the car... perhaps a relay on the door locks?

I think my alarm has got the interior motion sensor already. I've got a button (the button on the left of the roof control) that switches off the interior motion sensor.

Just had a look at the manual and it says:
"An audible and visual alarm is triggered if your vehicle is locked and a movement in your vehicle interior is detected, for example ..."

It's primed only with the roof up though, not with the roof down, and i think the windows have to be up and the boot closed. Then it's activated 30 seconds after locking the vehicle from the key.

It says in the manual that the motion sensor is primed with the roof down in the Netherlands, so it must be a setting in the car's computer somewhere to get it working.

Sounds like a similar situation as the "alarm beep"

Problem is, i don't have the button or the sensor.

Do you know where the sensor is located? is it visible?

I'll have a proper look tonight as i've never noticed the sensors anywhere previously and can't see it being shown in the manual.

Thanks, That will help. Perhaps there is a wire harness hidden somewhere for those of us without the sensor

DanSLK has access to the computer of the SLK so once he's sorted out the mess caused by the fault roof maybe he can comment if his UK spec slk also has a motion sensor (i think he said his manufactured date was in 2004) and if it has then maybe he can find the option to switch it on too. But that's no help to you noregret4life.

noregret4life> as you're quite knowledgeable about these things, where do you suggest i look in the car for the sensors? if i haven't noticed them then i'm guessing they're well hidden.

i think it might be the louvres next to the interior light switch.

its good it only works with roof up, wind, leaves etc would set it off otherwise

chris_m, i would think the sensor should be either around the dome lights area, or perhaps towards the back where the rear speakers are around the middle storage compartment.

It would look similar to a "vent" or speaker cover having a mesh over it.
Here is a pic of it in the C-Class on the roof

Thanks for the help

Default The sensors are in the overhead console

The sensors are in the overhead console within the shiny black plastic next to where the interior lights are. DanSLK had sent me instructions on how to remove the overhead console and one of the documents showed how to attach/remove the motion sensor.

My problem was I couldn't remove the overhead console. There's something in there that's holding it to the horizontal beam. DanSLK states there's a gripper of some sort and requires moderate force to remove. I didn't try or force it as I didn't want to break any tabs or grippers. If anyone has a method or trick on how to dislodge the gripper. Please post.

Correct the sensors are in the console for obvious reasons i don't think posting the wiring diagrams of a cars security systems on the web is a good idea so i wont but the documents etyu has should be useful to you as pointed out you might have to be a bit crude with the thing to remove it just don't break the darn thing.
I have been unable to find any document that mentions the harness to the overhead console being modified for the alarm so i would imagine that the plug should be up in the cross-member somewhere.
As Chris pointed out i am a little bit tied up at the moment with the roof and the CAN B is not accessible at the moment so my SDS cant tell me what settings there are for the alarm but once its sorted i will have a look for you see what has to be done to the computer.
I would recommend the Merc OEM (I don't work for them by the way i just want to point that out) because the alarm is very advanced and is not plug and play increased resistances on the wires could be enough to shut the system down defeating its purpose at least with the OEM the system will know exactly whats going on and i cant be 100% but you might need the button in the switch group replaced so the system can check for continuity.

Hope this helps

Dan

I have that "option"... it's just a small button on the left of the roof button... and on the R170, it was the litle red button (to be pushed 2 or 3 times) near the lights panel.

I don't want to mess with the factory alarm too much. Just sort of add 3rd party to it without changing the original.

I think at this point my hunt is not so much for the actual motion sensor itself, but for a trigger that will activate with the car locked / unlocked. Once i have this trigger, the rest is easy and there is a ton of stuff that will work.

I think i remember in the R170 forums a wire you can tap into in the main fuse box that triggers during lock/unlock. Perhaps there is such a thing on the R171?
