Default Tire replacement

My 2006 SLK55 w/30 package has once again eaten up a set of rears. This is after approximately 6500 - 7000 miles.

The rear tires are the same as original: Pirellis 245/35 zr 18 92 Y XL

These have worn with my only driving it on weekends and my wife driving it as a daily driver. One of us is pretty aggressive.

The question is what tire do you guys suggest, Goodyear Eagle F-1? Stay woth Pirellis? And what sizes can I do (Im pretty much an idiot when it comes to tire sizes)

My next tires for sure are the Good Year Eagle F-1's, Check them out at tirerack and compare them to other high performance tires they provide.

I just bought a set of Goodyear F1's. Haven't mounted them on the car yet. A lot of people sware by Michelin PS2's, which are a very good tire but cost quite a bit more. 4 PS2's cost over $ 1300.00 mounted. Goodyears, under $ 900.00. This is for 19" size, not sure what they are for 18".

Car and Driver did a comparo a year or so back and they rated the Goodyears tops. Mainly because they were very good in almost all categories, including dry conditions, although not quite as good as the PS2's, but very close. But, they were rated much better in wet conditions. I see you're in Florida so temps aren't a problem (freezing cold is not good for these type of tires), but rain may. If your wife is using the car as a daily driver, that may mean something to you. Also, the reason the Goodyear is so good in the wet, is the tread design. Some don't like it. It's definitely a little unconventional. I do like it, it is unique and let's people know you're driving a high performance tire. Lastly, looks count for something. PS2's are really nice looking. They have a squarer sidewall. The Goodyear is a little more rounded, though I think they look pretty nice too.

If you track your car, then the PS2's might be the best choice. If you don't can't go wrong with either. In the end, I chose the Goodyears mainly because of price and Car and Drivers rating.

I also heard good things about Toyo T1S or T1R's, can't remember which one was discontinued, I have Nitto's NT555, will probably try goodyears when I have to get them replaced.

Don't go with the Toyo's. I ran both T1-S and T1-R (I'm still on my T1-R fronts) and they're not as good as I thought. I upgraded to Yokohama Advan Sport rears and the difference is phenomenal.

One thing to consider is that if you have 19's and are planning to drop, you need a tire with a rounder sidewall like the Good Years to clear the fender and make sure it doesn't rub. My Yoko's will definitely make my rears rub if I drop. PS2's will rub on dropped 19's also.

I almost bought the Michelin's but their price and treadwear kept me back. Their treadwear is at 200 the lowest of the group, they do not last long. They are a soft tire and that is the reason they are so good in dry conditions, they stick like glue. I did some research and ended up with the Falken's FK452, a tire with brand new technology and good press so far. The treadwear is pretty high at 300 for this type of tire and their performance compares to the Goodyear's and the Toyos. As Ynot can confirm the Nittos are not good in wet weather and I am in Virginia so wet weather is the name of the game. I never had a good experience with a set of Pirellis, they do not make them like they used to.

I forgot to mention that. I haven't heard of anybody rubbing with Goodyears due to their slightly rounder sidewall. I'm dropping the car with Brabus Springs and I absolutely didn't want rubbing, another reason to get the Goodyears.

Please post your feedback once you get some miles on the Good Years. I've never run with Good Years so I don't have any faith in them (I'm a Bridgestone Potenza guy). I want some real world feedback (road use and track use) regarding these tires so that I'll have some faith in them before I replace my fronts (I'm still deciding, ~2000 miles left on the front T1-R's).

REMEMBER, Treadwear numbers can ONLY be compared WITHIN a single manufacturer's tire line.

You can NOT compare Treadware nums across manufacturers.

So a Falken tire with TW=300 could actually be less (worse) than a Mich at 200.

I agree moved from Continentals to Michelin's on my cayenne and it was a good move or your supporting Michelin because its French?

Just joking with you, I think they perform well on Kuwait's hot tarmac but they are wearing due to my slightly aggressive driving.

I have these tires in the back and also really like them. traction is comparable to the pirellis, but it seems to be lasting longer. I'll update you guys once i run them out.

I too am a Potenza guy, having put Pole Positions on the back tires. Check out Tire Rack, they have good comparisons. But a good "sticky" tire will not last long, especially if you are pushing your SLK around. I would be interested in what Goodyears or Yokohama Advan's do on a car.

i had goodyear eagle f1's on my old car, and i found them to be very good, even in the wet, but they give off some serious road noise!!!!! serioulsy people used to tell me they could tell my car due to the tyre noise coming up the road.
i have dunlop sports now and they are great! loved the p-zero but they wear away so quickly and its too much money to keep replacnig them every few months.

I use the Bridgestone Turanza E300 225/45-17 which has done a great job so far. I have used them two seasons on a W203 and then another two seasons on my SLK200. Now I had to replace the rear tyres. They were completely gone (slicks). The two front tyres are almost as new. Strange wear on the rear, my small 4-cyl motor can't be that strong or?
