Default Transmission Failure

Back in October, I had a women bang into the back of my car and it split my rear bumper shell. They also dented one of my exhaust tips. Since I don't drive the SLK in the winter, I parked it until recently when I finally took it to the body shop to get it fixed. BTW, in order to fix an exhaust tip, you have to buy half of the exhaust system and the price is $2200 CDN. Today I went to pick it up and noticed the Check Engine light was on. I went back into the body shop and they said they didn't do anything so they didn't know why this light would be on. (They did tell me the battery was dead so they had to charge it. This doesn't make sense because it has been parked since Nov and it fired up right away last week when I took it in??) I figured I was ready for the service B so I would get MB to check out the light. Upon driving away from the shop, I noticed the transmission was in "C" mode. I tried to change it but it wouldn't change. I also noticed that the transmission wouldn't change gears. I pulled over and put it into park. When I tried to put it back to drive, the transmission wouldn't go into gear. Reverse wouldn't work either. I had to get the road side service to bring a flat bed and take it to the dealer. Anyone else ever had this type of transmission issue??

from his alias, I would say an SLK 55 AMG and a Canadian (CDN) but CDN-SLK55, it would be nice to fill your profile with your location and model as the specs aren't the same over the world. People who can help you with your questions will have a much easier time... and, of course, CDN-SLK55, Welcome to the forum

This sounds like the control module to me.

Had a similar prob after my re-build a fault leading to a loss of charging current at the battery caused the computers to drop below 10 volts and start to shut down systematically killing system after system.

All depending on how they charged the car they could have damaged part of the charging system causing the battery to start to drain and the TCU to shut off (normally associated with other faults also)

Parts of the network between the computers could have been damaged easy to do if you don't know how to correctly charge on on these causing signals to get lost.

They could have damaged the transmission itself when working on the car and the system has gone into safe mode.

Or it could be confused from a battery disconnect when charging and it will simply be reset and all will be well.

I hope its the last option and i really hope your tranny is OK or you can get the shop to pay for any damages to it otherwise its gonna hurt.

Symptoms are exactly like the Trans Valve Body issue (though of course other problems might have the same symptoms).

Check Eng light, trans goes into Limp Home Mode.

There was a TSB for this. Supposedly only affect MY 2005 (I think, maybe early 06 production to).

It really is an itermitent that can be cleared (temporarily?) by a battery disconnect. But does need to go to service, ASAP.

Well it has been two days and they still don't know what the problem is. I am a bit worried that the Body Shop screwed something up and I may get hit with a big bill for it.

A good friend of mine has had a similar problem in his 55. The software of the control unit of the gear box made the problems. New software - the problems were gone.

They can't find anything?

I don't know of much that does not store a fault code for the DAS to read off, have they given it a once over by eye its normally hardware stuff the computer can't see but the eye can pick out easy.

This is a MB dealer right i know you say it was taken to one i am just making sure they are approved.

Ok, after 10 days, they have decided that my car needs a new transmission. They have been trying all kinds of things that Germany has been telling them and nothing has fixed the problem. Finally MB Germany told them to order the new transmission. It will take at least a week for it to get to Canada and another 3 days to get it installed. They have no idea what caused the failure or what part within the transmission has failed. Not a lot of confidence with my dealer right now...

Warranty is covering it. They think it is an electrical issue within the transmission but can't narrow it down.

Glad to hear they're covering it for ya. Now since they're gonna be under there to drop the transmission would be a good time to have them slip in a new set of headers - make the best of a bad situation!
