Default How to upgrade audio 20

Hello all and I want to wish good luck to these forums...
I have ordered a new slk that will be equiped with the Audio 20 without a cd changer (could not get the command system for various reasons).
I want to keep the factory radio and the ability to control through the steering wheel buttons but would like to integrate an ipod with it.
I am aware that this is not possible since the slk audio 20 does not have an aux port . I also want to provide my speakers with a better amplified signal.
I was wondering whether such a device as the alpine mobile hub would work with the stock audio 20 and could be conected to it. Or any other system that would accept additional inputs for ipod etc .
Upgrading to the command is not an option....Without the cd changer, the audio 20 is not integrated to the MOST fibre optic ring of the car.
Can the hi-fi savvy of you propose something that would keep the existing radio and would help integrate an ipod and possibly improve the sound driven towards the speakers???

Thanks

It's going to be tough. Somewhere on one of the forums, there's information where one member upgraded to an aftermarket radio. Biggest problem is with the fiber optic wiring in the SLK. Most new vehicles are becoming increasingly difficult to upgrade. Many systems to include the audio are integrated with other systems. Someone here can provide additional information. Good luck!

From what i read in the previous threads and from the attached training file you can see that the Audio 20 outputs to Speaker Level outputs (which means directly to speakers) The only way i can see adding additional power and/or an input is to convert the Speaker Level outputs from the Audio 20 to Line Level outputs (like those required for amps)

With Line Level outputs, you can connect them into some sort of gateway like you mentioned which would have switchable inputs.
The problem with this setup is your Audio 20 has nothing to do with the volume when you connect your mp3 player to it.

Another possible way is using an inline FM modulator. There are some powerfull FM modulators that you can connect directly to the ANT on the back of the Audio 20. (you will need an addapter for the Euro plug > to typical FM ant. plug) I actually have these addapters laying around.

Then you can set the FM modulator to turn on from a switch, and connect the MP3 player to it as an imput. < this is the easiest way to try an AUX connection, and the least expensive. Total around $60 for all parts.

If the FM modulator works, then you can upgrade the power to the speakers using the above Line level conversion method.

Check out this PDF file (page 40) it will give you all the info on the Audio system in the R171
