Charging iPhone 3G with Media Interface in 2009 SLKs
I have 2009 SLK 350. It has the multimedia interface, with an iPod cable. This hooks up fine with my old iPod and even my iPhone 3G, but it won't charge the iPhone.
I bought one of these iPhone 3G charge converters from Scosche called the passport, but it's evidently incompatible with the Mercedes implementation.
so does Mercedes happen to make a replacement cable? Or would the separately available USB cable for the media interface work maybe? That might charge the new iPhones plus also have the same integration since USB is how you connect it to other devices and things.

mb911 - I *think* MB Europe has released a new set of cables that will charge the iPhone, but honestly, I thought the Scosche worked - at least it worked fine in a freinds C class with media interface....

Strange, certainly doesn't work with mine and Scosche claims it's a known incompatibility.
Appreciate that information on the cable, I'll look into it.
All iPod models before the iPhone 3G could use the firewire or USB connection pins to charge the device. Most charging cables used the firewire pins to charge the device, however to save money the iPhone 3G removed the firewire charging pins and will only charge using the USB pins. When I first got the iPhone 3G I had to get a new FM Transmitter charging cable for my car, so that's how I found out about the problem.
I'm suprised that the 2009 model wouldn't have the newer USB charging cable.
Hmm... I don't drive the SLK regularly (the wife does), but a few weekends ago I put my Iphone in the glove box and drove around for about 4 hours listening to tunes and my phone was fully charged at the end of the night. So, on our car it must charge the Iphone. Ours is a 2009 SLK 300.

Hum
original iPHone or iPhone 3G? It does charge the original one.
I also bought the Scosche adapter for my 2009 SLK 300 & it doesn't work for me either. I have the 4th gen Nano which I bought just to use in my car. I did call my MB dealer & was told that they are aware of the problem & are trying to come up with a solution. Hope it doesn't take too long, it's really annoying having to recharge my nano every couple of days.
i read a couple of article here and there on charging the iPhone 3G.
Apparently, the issue is more with the phone and not the media interface kit. WIth the 3G, they changed something in there that will now result in the 3G not being charged by the media interface kit. Charging of older iPhones (pre-3G) and iPods should not be an issue.
Read also that Merc has come up with an iPhone interface kit... and these are apparently good for charging the 3G phones.. Let me include the links below..
Any info if the iphone cradle can be used on earlier model MB vehicles, like 2005-2008 US model year SLK's? Will the cradle be something as easy to clicking unto the existing receptacle for the bluetooth puck?

Just got my fiance and red 2009 SLK 300 last week and am suprsing her with it tomorrow. Anyway, I got the passporte adapter and it worked on her SLK yesterday. I use one in my infiniti EX35 and it works as well. Tonight I took her car out and it wouldn't charge. I exchanged the adapter at the Apple store and still wouldn't charge. Took the one out of my EX and still no charge. I don't get why it worked yesterday and on sunday and today it won't! I've also read the CableJive adapter doesn't work either. Any suggestions?

The passport certainly does not work with the new multimedia interface on 2009 SLKs. The people who make the passport even confirmed this to me.

I have exactly the same experience. I had to buy a second cable to charge my iPhone 3G.
Well, gentlemen, I am happy to inform you that the cable that enables charging the iPhone in the SLK (171) is available in the US.
I found the part number in a british forum and gave it to the parts guy at R.A.B. motors in San Rafael, CA. To my surprise, he called me the next morning saying he ordered it and it had already arrived!!!
I switched the old cable for the one and... Voila! My iPhone 3Gs is charging!
The part number is A 001 827 84 04
I also attached a few pictures that show the sticker from the bag the cable came in and my iPhone charging on the custom-made cradle I created for it (I used a CableJive extension to connect it to the jack in the glove box).
Enjoy!
Mauro

iphone 3Gs does not charge on ipod cable on Sept 09 SLK bought in UK.
Can be charged using the USB connector supplied with a standard usb iphone PC cable plugged into that connector. However the device is not recognised so charging only.
Got an in car charger from Amazon for £5 so no problem.
