Great list.
I was using this for all cars in general - http://autos.msn.com/advice/articles/aischecklist.aspx

But this one is so specific to SLK. I'm fortunate to see this today, because am gonna look at one used SLK today.

Had the problem with the leaky hydraulics in the top...expensive to fix AND ruins the headliner!! Also, really get under or in front/behind the car to check the tires for uneven wear. Ive had a couple tires that looked good from the wheel well and were down to belts on the inside tread.

Looking for the "Thanks!" button! Great original list, and also follow up advice (especially from murat orhan). ... Perhaps I'll work on a PDF suitable for printing & then taking notes

One question: any good (safe) way to check for smoke while you're driving? Can anyone recommend a good trick with the mirrors?

Sorry to double post, but in preparing the PDF I have some questions
  • headliner & cylinder leaks: what to look for? Does the fluid leak slowly before it leaks so much as to ruin the headliner? What does the fluid look like?
  • Engine light in key II: please confirm a typo "if it does not light up, check with a diagnostic scanner". I think "not" is a mistake.
  • HVAC fan: does it operate with engine off?
  • Air circulation flap: where is it?
  • Brake lining: any rule of thumb? Are they visible with the wheel on?
  • Next service: can anyone confirm that all years have?
    • display for 10s when key in position 2
    • Icon: one wrench (A) or two wrenches (B) blinks for 30s + tone
    • after, can see by pressing left button twice quickly
      • Newly reset = 10k miles (15k km) and 365 days

Thanks

Default Great list

Nice list, remember these cars are now over 10 years old - but parts are plentiful and lots of used and aftermarket parts and accessories available for reasonable prices. So you will find lots that you can do to really customize your ride. Mine has been reliable - have had it for 6+ years and only real problem has been roof operation - wound up having all of the sensor/switches replaced to get it working right - think there is a lot of good info on that on this forum. But in all other respects, has been a lot of fun and reliable although I don't put a lot of miles on it.

Be sure to check the seating comfort - 99 seats are on the firm side and while that wouldn't have changed my decision make sure you'll be OK with them. I'm currently looking into options for improving seat comfort which would be really helpful.

One additional I'd add is not to trust the CARFAX report but get your insurance company to check their claims database.

Apparently if a prior owner had major damage without another car involved and the car was totaled out by the insurer, there are few states or insurers who will actually enforce the requirement that the accident be reported and the title be marked salvage. Sellers are quite well aware of what a salvage title car is worth, so have every incentive to cheat. As a result, the CARFAX can be clean but the vehicle is anything but, and only an inspection including putting the car on a lift could show it visibly.

The insurance companies have their own claim reporting database, and if you call up your insurance company with the VIN they will be able to pull up the report and tell you all of the claims that CARFAX won't.

hi
- to reach the air flap actuator (element), you have to remove the glove box and what's behind (see pix). Its in direction of the yellow arrow. To see the flap itself you have to remove the cover under wipers under the hood.(wiper arms first). (This is very easy.) You can also try to listen closely if the flap is working as you push on/off the recirculation button when the fan is on. (Note: The flap will work for several times in key pos.II without engine running until the vaccum rezervoir is empty.) Additional there is a valve which turns on and off the vaccum to the element behind the glove box. Sometimes this also may fail giving you similar problem.
(note: The flap should always stay open when the engine is off to let fresh air in car when it is parked.)

- If top cyclinder leaks you will only notice after it ruins your headliner!
Better to check frequently on models olders than 10 years if you dont want to change the cyclinder. Oil is similar to engine oil. (see the pic.)

- "check engine light" can be in-activated by default in some countries. It will never light up even the system reports any trouble. To understand this: it should be lit in pos.II with all other lights. It can be re-activated by a diagnostic computer.

hope its useful...(pics are taken form other posts.)
and what tell are learned by the hard way

Your check list is very thorough but if these items were on your check list, I missed them, and I consider them to be important. A spare tire as well as a jack and lug nut wrench.

I'd add to that a 'working' air compressor if you get the inflatable spare. Definitely, don't want to be on a lonesome highway without a spare tire. Cell phones don't work everywhere I've had to use the own in my porsche once.

Default Alarm test

Not sure if the 230 has an alarm system, but the 01 320 does and mine is doing wierd stuff. Be sure to test out the alarm by arming it, trying to open doors/trunk to set it off. Etc. It should all work as expected.

Great checklist. Thanks! I purchased a 2001 SLK 230K about a month ago. Checked for most of the things on your list but the process would have been even better if I had your list in hand. Wonderful car and I am enjoying it. Love the forum!

Default Early 170 vs. Late 170 * Cam Sensor

"... Check the cam magnet under grey cover in front of the engine. Possible oil leak from this device can find a way through your ECU!!!..."

If you get a 2001-2004, call your friendly local MB Dealer and ask about:
"Campaign No. 2009100001, December 2009"
They will ask for the VIN of the car and see if it is one of the @65,000 230k's that get the free recall repair that has no sunset date.
Have them check for any and all recalls, you never know what you will find. Taillights have been known to be a problem on them.

Was there was a reason you are going for an early 170? I have a 2001 230 Sport, the first of the late 170s. I am told that it has all of the AMG goodies except the supercharged V6. MB states that there were a few tweaks between the 97-2000s and the 2001-2004's. On paper they bumped the h.p.from 194 to 198, but I have seen articles claiming that MB later revised these numbers up to @220 h.p. In addition, it comes with the larger wheels which makes the car stick to the road like a slot car. I have not checked the part numbers for parst like A Arms, brakes, etc, but I have been told that that package took a nice car and made it better.

Default How To Tell A 230 Sport at 25 feet

The 230k was upgraded with the 320 and the 32 AMGs, but they also added a "Sport" package to the 230s so there was, between 2001-2004, a Base model SLK 230 and a SLK 230 Sport. Both were Kompressors.
On the base models, the word "Kompressor" appears on the front fenders just behind the front wheels, while on the Sport models there is a much smaller badge that says "Sport". On the rear decklid the Sport model will say "SLK 230" on the left side and "Kompressor" on the right.

I have noticed different parts numbers while researching suspention components, so I am inclined to believe what I have heard about the upgraded suspensions.
